6. Final words, our verdict, pros and cons

The competition

Motorola frankly made an absolute spectacle out of pricing the Edge 70 Pro. Just a few days ago, at launch, we found it retailing for £749.99 in the UK, €799 in Germany and €899 in France. Granted, that's for the 12GB/512GB variant, but even so, the pricing sounds totally unreasonable. As of writing this, the same official stores have it listed at £749.99/€698.99/€699.00, respectively. This sort of price fluctuation is weird to say the least.

On Amazon Germany, you can get a base 8GB/256GB unit for around €670, plus whatever shipping costs from Latvia to you. In the Bulgarian home market (part of the EU), we found the base 8GB/256GB listed for as low as €540, though other vendors had it for around €630. Frankly, we have a hard time figuring out how much the phone is supposed to cost, so let's assume somewhere between €550-€650 and look at what the competition has to offer in this price range.

Probably the most recognizable competitor to consider is the Samsung Galaxy S25 FE. It is about on par with the Moto in terms of performance, and the camera setups can trade some blows back and forth, though the Moto arguably has the edge. The battery life win definitely goes to the Moto, though, but there is no doubt that Samsung has the much better software support with a whopping 7 major OS updates. And if you feel like saving quite a few bucks, while sacrificing a few things like the telephoto, then the Samsung Galaxy A57 is worth considering as well.

It is hard to argue with the value proposition set forth by the Poco X8 Pro Max. Again, like with Samsung, you can get most of the way there with the X8 Pro and save a lot of money in the process, but there is just something that makes the Pro Max special. Arguably, it's the humungous battery. Unfortunately, no telephoto camera here, but other than that, it's a great all-around phone.

If the telephoto is high up on your priority list, then perhaps the vivo V70 will be a good fit. It won't be topping any performance charts, but it is a very well-rounded device. You can expect an excellent display, great battery life and pretty great camera performance.

And if you really like the Motorola approach to smartphone design, there is always the option to save some money and go for last year's Edge 60 Pro model. We've already outlined the differences between the current Edge 70 Pro throughout the review, and you will be missing out on a few interesting upgrades, but honestly, nothing that major.

Our verdict

The Motorola Edge 70 Pro is another very solid addition to Motorola's Edge lineup. It builds intelligently on last year's model with a larger silicon-carbon battery, a brighter display, a welcome periscope telephoto upgrade and a more powerful chipset, all while becoming noticeably thinner and lighter. That's an impressive list of improvements for what is otherwise a fairly iterative generation.

The overall user experience is hard to fault. Battery life is among the best in the class; the AMOLED display is excellent; the software remains clean and pleasantly close to stock Android; and the camera system is consistently capable. The new 50MP periscope finally gives the Edge Pro series a telephoto camera worthy of the name and rounds out an already versatile imaging package.

The phone isn't without compromises, however. Motorola continues to lag behind many rivals when it comes to long-term software support, offering just three major Android upgrades. Charging, while still plenty fast, is no longer class-leading, and video recording - particularly in low light - isn't nearly as polished as the otherwise strong still photography.

Pricing is ultimately what will determine the Edge 70 Pro's success. At the lofty launch prices seen in some markets, it is a difficult recommendation when devices like Samsung's Galaxy S25 FE are within striking distance. Once the price settles closer to the €550-600 mark, however, the Edge 70 Pro becomes a much more compelling proposition. At that level, its combination of premium design, outstanding battery endurance, excellent display and versatile cameras makes it one of the more complete upper-midrange smartphones currently available.
