  • To mark Reproductive Health Month (February), we celebrate the remarkable journey of Dr Nangomso Malashe, an award recipient of the Discovery Foundation. Diagnosed with polio at the age of three, Dr Malashe was determined not to let her disability define her. She rose above adversity to dedicate her career to advancing women’s health and improving reproductive care in rural South Africa. She says, “My father encouraged me to work hard and never let my disability define my capabilities.” Today, she is a registrar in family medicine at Mthatha Regional Hospital, driven by her passion to improve women’s health in rural communities. Dr Malashe’s research addresses one of South Africa’s most pressing reproductive health challenges. According to the World Health Organization, unsafe abortions remain one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. This statistic underline the importance of Dr Malashe’s research in addressing gaps in contraceptive knowledge and access, particularly in rural communities. To make her study possible, Dr Malashe was awarded the Discovery Foundation Rural Individual Award. The grant has provided her with the support needed to conduct the research, allowing her to employ two assistants, cover their transport to clinics, and fund essential tools for data collection. Dr Malashe’s determination and research embody the progress that becomes possible when awareness, education, and opportunity converge, ensuring gynaecological health is placed at the heart of community wellbeing. #DiscoveryFoundation #ReproductiveHealth #SouthAfrica

Today is #WorldCancerDay - a moment to reflect on how early detection, smarter screening and data-driven support are helping Discovery Health Medical Scheme members detect cancer sooner and improve their health outcomes. To mark this day, Discovery Health Medical Scheme has released a new set of insights related to the impact of cancer on Scheme members. First, the insights showcase the profound impact of Personal Health Pathways (a groundbreaking innovation launched in January 2025 that delivers real-time, personalised health recommendations) in helping members to screen for cancer. In 2025 members engaged in their Pathways completed: • 16 200 pap smears • 14 000 mammograms • 13 500 prostate screenings • 7 000 bowel-cancer screenings That means 36% more cancer screening checks were completed than expected, based on member behaviour before 2025, with real-life impact - read our Scheme members’ stories at https://lnkd.in/dFtdhJMs. The Scheme also shares that regular cancer screening directly results in an 18.6% higher probability of early-stage cancer diagnosis and a 13.1% absolute reduction in five-year mortality rates (67% relative reduction in mortality risk) – which translates to lives extended or saved. Other important insights from the Scheme’s report include: • A 3.8% increase in members diagnosed with cancer for the first time between 2024 and 2025 (Jan–Oct each year) • A 7.1% increase in members registered as living with cancer — including newly diagnosed members and those diagnosed previously who continue accessing cancer care • Over the past 14 years (2012–2025, Jan to October each year), the Scheme has funded R29 billion in cancer-related claims, reflecting rising prevalence and the increasing cost and duration of modern cancer care. The World Cancer Day theme for 2025 to 2027 is “United by Unique”, highlighting the importance of collective commitment against cancer and of placing people at the centre of care. Cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, causing nearly 10 million (one in six) deaths in 2020 alone — and the World Health Organization reports that 1 in 5 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. For Discovery Health Medical Scheme, people-centred care remains the North Star behind the robust, coordinated support available to members diagnosed with cancer. As the burden of cancer rises, our focus remains on ensuring every member has access to the right treatment, at the right time — supported by high-quality clinical pathways and compassionate care through the Scheme’s Oncology Programme. • This World Cancer Day (04 February 2026), we honor the work of South African radiologist Dr Nondumiso Dlamini whose dedication to early detection and innovation is helping transform patient outcomes, particularly for women under 40 facing breast cancer. At the age of eleven, Dr Dlamini endured an undiagnosed case of appendicitis that led to sepsis and weeks in hospital – an experience that could have been avoided with proper imaging. “If that imaging equipment and modalities had been available at that time and used correctly, I could have been saved from a lot of trauma,” she recalls. Today, she serves as Head of Radiology at iNkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and Academic Head of Radiology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Her current research supported by the 2023/2024 Discovery Foundation MGH Fellowship Award focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the early detection of breast cancer in young South African women. “We’ve started noting that we were getting more younger women presenting with breast cancer,” she explains. Dr Dlamini sees AI as a tool for hope: “The AI can at least be utilised to triage patients. Radiographers can continue imaging the patients, process the images on the AI software, and the ones categorised as probable malignancy can be fast-tracked into being referred to specialised breast-care centres or units.”

𝗔𝗻 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲. As the administrators of the Discovery Health Medical Scheme, the trust of members is paramount to Discovery Health. Today, we announced that we will cover the full cost of a claims system error that led to the overpayment of certain Above Threshold Benefit (ATB) claims during 2025. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿. Ordinarily, when members’ claims are overpaid, the Scheme’s rules and industry legislation allow those funds to be recovered, because the funds in the Scheme belong to all members. Despite this, having carefully listened to members’ concerns and considered their individual experiences and circumstances, Discovery Health has decided to cover the cost of this error on members’ behalf. For peace of mind, there is no impact on members outside this group, and benefits for 2026 across all plans remain completely unaffected. The claims statements of affected members are being updated and our dedicated service team is contacting them to resolve any outstanding queries. Discovery Health apologises unreservedly to members affected by this error. We believe it is the right decision to cover this cost, it reflects our commitment to fairness, integrity and putting members first, especially when we fall short.
