Embracing empathy in the workplace 🌟 A few weeks ago, I faced a tough time. For the first time in 44 years, I wasn't celebrating my wedding anniversary, as my husband passed away last year. But I don't want sympathy (e.g., head tilted to the side and that look!). Instead, I want to highlight the importance of empathy in our lives, especially in the workplace. 🧡 Empathy, from the Greek empathia meaning passion, is about understanding and sharing the feelings of others. It's crucial for building strong teams and effective leadership. 🌈🤝 “Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler. Affective empathy: Sharing others' emotions can lead to compassionate actions but might also cause exhaustion. Cognitive empathy: Understanding emotions without being emotionally involved helps manage stress. Understanding the 'double empathy problem'—mutual misunderstandings between different thinkers—can foster better interactions and inclusivity. Let's create workplaces where everyone feels valued and understood. 🌟

  • Reacting impulsively to hurtful remarks can be a cycle that traps us, especially in the high-pressure environment of the corporate world. But what if there's an alternative? Picture this: taking an emotional detour, finding balance and self-awareness. Imagine navigating the workplace with a sense of calm and poise, even when faced with challenging interactions. This is the journey of mindful non-reaction and its profound impact on your emotional well-being. In the fast-paced corporate world, getting caught in the trap of immediate reactions is easy. A colleague's critical comment or a tense meeting can trigger an impulsive response, leading to unnecessary conflict and stress. But by embracing mindful techniques, you can break this cycle and foster a more harmonious work environment. 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞. 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞. 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞. When faced with a triggering moment, the first step is to pause. Take a deep breath and give yourself a moment to process the situation. This brief pause can be enough to prevent an impulsive reaction. Example: Imagine you're in a meeting, and a colleague makes a dismissive remark about your project. Instead of immediately defending yourself or reacting with frustration, take a moment to breathe. Observe your feelings without judgment. This pause allows you to respond thoughtfully, perhaps by asking for constructive feedback or clarifying your perspective calmly. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬: Mindful Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to centre yourself during stressful situations. This helps in reducing immediate emotional reactions. Reflective Listening: When someone makes a hurtful remark, listen to understand rather than to respond. This can diffuse tension and lead to more productive conversations. Empathy: Try to understand the person's perspective before making the remark. This can help you respond with compassion rather than defensiveness. Break the Cycle. By incorporating these techniques, you empower yourself to respond thoughtfully, breaking the escalating reaction cycle. This improves your emotional well-being and sets a positive example for your colleagues, fostering a more respectful and collaborative work environment. In conclusion, mindful non-reaction is a powerful tool in the corporate world. It enables you to navigate challenging interactions gracefully, enhancing your personal and professional life. Embrace this new approach and watch as it transforms your workplace dynamics. As a coach, I've seen firsthand the transformative power of mindfulness. It elevates your professional interactions and enriches your personal growth. If you're looking to cultivate a mindful approach in your professional life, I'm here to guide you on this journey. Together, we can create a work environment where calm, clarity, and compassion thrive. #MindfulLeadership #EmotionalIntelligence #CorporateWellbeing #ProfessionalGrowth #MindfulnessCoaching #CoachSharath

As someone who works 7 days a week, I have had to create weekends and strict rest periods inside my days of active work. Saturday and Sundays are more led with personal tasks but I can't fully disconnect from the mission on weekends and so day naps, strict working days of 10am-3am and working after 8pm (the kids bedtime) become a method of achieving all of my goals and commitments. My consideration for you is: Clarify your values: Reflect on what truly matters to you. Identify your core values and aspirations in both your professional and personal spheres. Understanding what is most important will help you make more aligned choices. Set boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Determine specific times and spaces dedicated to work, and make a conscious effort to disconnect and engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment outside of work. Communicate your boundaries to colleagues, clients, and loved ones to foster respect and understanding. Prioritise self-care: Taking care of yourself is crucial for maintaining overall well-being. Prioritise self-care activities that recharge and rejuvenate you, such as exercise, quality sleep, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones. Remember that self-care is not selfish; it enables you to show up as your best self in all areas of life. Assess your workload: Evaluate your workload and responsibilities realistically. Be mindful of taking on too much and learn to delegate or say no when necessary. Recognise that you have limitations, and it is essential to avoid burnout by finding a sustainable balance between productivity and rest. Foster open communication: Engage in open and honest communication with your employer, colleagues, and loved ones about your work-life balance priorities. Clearly express your needs and concerns, and seek solutions that accommodate both personal and professional commitments. Collaborative dialogue can lead to mutually beneficial arrangements. Embrace flexibility: Explore opportunities for flexible work arrangements, such as remote work, flexible hours, or compressed workweeks. Flexibility can help create more space for personal pursuits and enable a better integration of work and life responsibilities. Practice mindfulness and presence: Cultivate mindfulness by being fully present in the present moment, whether you are at work or engaged in personal activities. By focusing on the task at hand, you can enhance productivity, reduce stress, and derive greater enjoyment from your experiences. Regularly reassess and adjust: Recognise that work-life balance is a dynamic process. Regularly assess your approach, considering your changing circumstances and priorities. Adjust your choices and commitments accordingly to maintain a harmonious equilibrium over time.

Your lack of boundaries is limiting your career success. Boundaries not only safeguard your well-being but also contribute to a successful and sustainable career. If you feel like you struggle to set up clear boundaries, here are some practical strategies to help you establish these: 👉🏿Understand what motivates you. Is it ambition, passion, or a desire for recognition? Knowing your drivers helps you align your boundaries with your goals. 👉🏿Boundaries aren't limitations; they're enablers. Reflect on how setting boundaries can enhance your productivity, creativity, and overall job satisfaction.Remember, saying "no" to certain tasks allows you to say "yes" to what truly matters. 👉🏿Communicate openly with colleagues, supervisors, and clients. Let them know your working style, preferred communication channels, and availability. Be respectful but assertive. 👉🏿Allocate your energy wisely. Prioritize tasks that align with your strengths and contribute to your growth. Avoid burnout by setting limits on overtime and non-urgent requests. 👉🏿Establish consistent routines. Whether it's taking breaks, maintaining work-life balance, or practicing self-care, stick to your boundaries consistently. So many people struggle with career advancement because they don't know how to set clear boundaries. Hopefully this framework helps you early on or from now on. 💭What would you add? #theBOLDjourney #boundaries

Empathy is one of the greatest tools in a leader’s toolbox. It’s also one of the most underused. As a leader, I’ve learned that a little empathy can go a long way. I’ve had moments where a team member was clearly overwhelmed, and instead of pushing harder, I paused and simply asked, “How can I help?” That shift in approach made a big difference for both of us. ➡ Leaders who connect with their teams on an emotional level see better results. ➡ ️Employees who feel their leader genuinely cares about them are less likely to leave. High turnover costs organizations an average of $15,000 per employee in recruitment, onboarding, and lost productivity. Empathy isn’t just kindness. Empathy is: ★ "Let’s plan for your maternity leave to ensure a smooth transition while you’re away." ★ "I’m happy to make accommodations — let’s discuss what will help you work more comfortably." ★ "I understand the challenges. Let’s talk through them and find a solution together." ★ "Your feedback on the workflow is important. Let’s improve it so everyone feels supported." ★ "I’m hearing pushback. Let’s talk through the concerns and find a way to move forward." How have you seen empathy impact your work environment? How do you integrate it into your leadership style?

Transforming Workplace through Empathy, Culture & Meaningful People Practices

Ever had a manager who always “had an open door” but never seemed to “have open ears”? Picture this: Sarah’s manager tells her he’s always there if she needs anything. She knows his calendar is packed, so she’s hesitant to bring up how overwhelmed she’s been feeling with work and her personal responsibilities. But eventually, she decides to share her concerns, hoping for understanding and maybe a bit of guidance. She opens up, only to get a list of tips on time management and productivity tools. He means well, but Sarah walks away feeling like her manager missed the real message. She didn’t need a checklist—she needed empathy, someone to see her, listen, and make her feel heard. This scenario is all too common, especially in fast-paced work environments. We can be so focused on solving problems that we sometimes forget to simply understand them first. But here’s the thing: real, impactful leadership isn’t just about open doors; it’s about open minds and open hearts. The difference is huge. When leaders take the time to listen with empathy, they build trust and a stronger team culture. They foster an environment where people feel safe to share, to innovate, and to grow—because they know they’re valued as whole individuals, not just employees. So here’s a gentle reminder to leaders, managers, and even peers: next time someone approaches you with a concern, listen fully before you jump to solutions. Your presence, your empathy, and your understanding can often be the most powerful support you offer. Because at the end of the day, people may not remember every answer you gave—but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. #EmpatheticLeadership #HumanResources #PeopleFirst #LeadershipMatters #WorkplaceCulture

Ever noticed how some teams in your office seem to glide through challenges, their creativity blooming under pressure? What's their secret? You might be surprised: it's feminine energy. It's not just a trendy term. Leave that for the washed up influencers. Rewind a few years in my own career. A team reached out - they were all about hustle and grit—typical "masculine" traits of being tough and competitive. They were doing okay, but the air was often tense, and smiles were rare. I focused on nurturing, empathy, and cooperation—qualities typically associated with feminine energy. The transformation was not instant, but it was profound. By embracing these so-called "soft" skills, they didn't become less productive. Instead, they became a powerhouse. Teamwork improved, ideas flowed freely, and people felt valued and heard. This wasn't about making the workplace 'gentler'—it was about making it more human, more connected, and, yes, more successful. Critics often dismiss feminine energy as not suitable for the "tough" world of business. To them, I say: Think again. Isn't true resilience about bouncing back from challenges, something that requires empathy, understanding, and collaboration? These traits forge teams that aren't just tough, but truly unstoppable. So, how can your company tap into this powerful resource? Start simple: • Value all voices: Create spaces where every team member feels safe to express ideas and concerns. • Lead with empathy: Train your leaders to listen actively and respond with understanding. • Promote collaboration: Shift focus from individual achievement to team success. Embracing feminine energy isn't about tipping the scales entirely; it's about balance. It's about making the workplace not only more productive but also more joyful and sustainable. Key Takeaways: • Feminine energy involves traits like empathy, intuition, and collaboration. • Integrating these traits can lead to more innovative and resilient teams. • Start by fostering an inclusive, empathetic, and cooperative workplace culture. Imagine a workplace where everyone feels they belong, where the goal isn't just to succeed but to thrive together. That's not just inspiring; it's revolutionary. Let's start building that world today.

Being the smartest person in the room doesn’t always get you promoted. But the one who helps everyone else feel smart? They can be unstoppable. I've watched brilliant people plateau while those with average technical skills accelerate. The difference wasn't talent or connections. It was their ability to navigate the subtle, invisible dynamics  of the workplace. Here are 8 soft skills that can leave the strongest impression: 1. Emotional intelligence    → Reads the room and responds with empathy. 2. Lifting others up    → Helps teammates shine, not just themselves. 3. Saying no with grace    → Protects their time and the relationship. 4. Simplifying complexity    → Makes tough ideas easy to grasp. 5. Managing up    → Aligns with and supports their leader’s goals. 6. Owning mistakes    → Takes responsibility and makes it right, fast. 7. Building trust    → Keeps their promises. Every time. 8. Staying calm under pressure    → Brings steady energy when it matters most. The best part? You can build these skills. No reinvention required. You just need to shift your focus from trying to be impressive to being genuinely helpful.  ♻️ If this resonates, repost for your network. 📌 Follow Amy Gibson for more leadership insights.

Your workplace isn't failing because of poor strategy, it's crumbling from empathy bankruptcy. Why do today's organizations face increasing toxicity and turnover? Because many believe empathy is just a "nice-to-have" soft skill. Here's my framework to help you transform your professional environment: The reality is, that workplaces struggle because we've prioritized metrics over humanity. We've created spaces where people feel like resources rather than humans. The secret lies in making kindness a lifestyle, not just an occasional gesture. Benefits of this approach include: ↗️ Stronger team cohesion ↗️ Increased employee retention ↗️ Better customer relationships ↗️ Higher workplace satisfaction ↗️ Enhanced innovation through psychological safety Adopting empathy as a core value eliminates toxic behavior and builds a place where people care about each other. Here's how to think about it: → Kindness isn't just a nice idea but a way of life → We're stronger together when collective care trumps individual gain → Empathy is the ultimate connector, forging deeper relationships → Ignoring others' struggles disconnects us from human connection → Helping others enriches our own lives So when you build your workplace culture, here are 5 things to consider: 1. Replace occasional "team building" with daily acts of kindness 2. Create space for people to share their challenges without judgment 3. Recognize the power of collective support during difficult times 4. Understand that ignoring others' struggles has organizational consequences 5. Celebrate acts of kindness as much as professional achievements Here's an example: Instead of focusing only on performance reviews, try this: ↪️ Check in with team members regularly about their well-being ↪️ Rally around colleagues facing challenges ↪️ Create systems where helping others is recognized ↪️ Acknowledge the emotional impact of ignoring others' struggles ↪️ Build a culture where everyone feels seen and supported When kindness becomes your organizational lifestyle, you'll find that success follows naturally. As Einstein said, "The ideals which have lighted my way have been kindness, beauty, and truth." What small act of kindness can you implement in your workplace today?
