I recently showed a major Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) client our Colombia operation. What shocked them most wasn't our technology - it was how wrong these two common beliefs about nearshore centers are. Two most outdated beliefs about working with contact centers outside the US: Myth #1: Contact centers outside the US provide inferior service Reality: The quality and performance of overseas work is often EQUAL OR BETTER than domestic operations. What we've observed is declining work ethic in domestic contact centers while our South African and Colombian teams consistently outshine in: - Customer treatment - Empathy - Performance metrics - Company loyalty (they're building careers, not jumping jobs). Myth #2: Language and cultural barriers create significant communication issues Reality: Many nearshore contact centers have highly proficient English speakers. Colombia's strategic location and strong educational focus make it a prime outsourcing destination: - Proximity to the US allows for cultural understanding - High-quality English education (therefore multilingual support) - Lower unemployment rates create a stable, motivated workforce (7-9% compared to higher rates in other regions) - Significant investment in technology and professional training - Competitive pricing without compromising quality. These emerging markets represent a wealth of untapped talent for US companies. Over the past two years at Otonomee | B Corp™, I’ve had to privilege of watching us grow from less than 100 team members to 600+ across Ireland, Portugal, Colombia, North America, Romania, Japan, Spain, and Bulgaria. Scaling at this pace teaches you quickly what matters. Prior to that I joined Voxpro when we had fewer than 100 team members and seeing us scale to 4,000+ globally. I know what scale looks like. A few lessons I’ve learned along the way: Recruit well. Obsess over who you bring into the business. Skills can be taught — attitude, curiosity, and resilience are much harder to change. The right people are out there; you just have to be intentional (and patient) enough to find them. Be intentional about culture Don't leave it to chance. It’s shaped by the decisions you make long before you need them. If you’re not clear on the culture you want as you grow, you’ll end up with one by default. Listen. Really listen. To your employees. To your customers. Growth creates noise (a lot of it at times) — but the most valuable insights are usually already being shared if you’re willing to hear them. Cherish your customers. So many companies chase the next deal (which is normal). From my experience, when you get the experience right for existing customers, growth tends to follow naturally. Scaling isn’t just about speed 🚀 It’s about making the right decisions before complexity catches up with you. Hypergrowth exposes everything.
