    Before you start working as a planning engineer, it is mandatory to have some years of hands on field experience, be it in construction, engineering or fabrication. Spend most of your time in the field or construction site, vendor shop, fabrication yard, consultant's office to understand the job and learn the execution, interfaces, quality requirements, inspections etc. This will help you to learn the following. 1) Visualising the job and its sequence of activities 2) Organising and contributing in review meetings 3) Listening and understanding the opinions and concerns from all team members 4) Asking questions from planning point of view 5) Trying to Integrate the activities of different disciplines and phases 6) Exploring the risks and hindrances for progress 7) Grasping the project dynamics, it is altogether different in the real world with real work and real people. 8) Realising the fact that often the preparation of the work is actually more critical than doing the work itself It is not easy and has its own challenges, but it is worth it, as all this experience and the exposure over the years increases your competence as a project controls engineer and leader.
