One of my key takeaways from IBM Think 2026 comes through clearly in this recent TechTarget article featuring Christopher Aiken.    AI transformation is about redesigning how work gets done so people can focus on judgment, planning, and impact, not just adding more tools and programs.   AI at scale requires significant work behind the scenes, and as Chris notes, it’s only increasing the need for human intellect in tax and finance.   AI can simplify complexity and elevate professional judgment, but only when the foundations are in place.   The article is worth the read for leaders thinking about the mid-to-long-term view of AI transformation: https://lnkd.in/eb2aY6uB

Contract work is becoming another place where AI agents are moving into the workflow. The app environment is still more mixed than a lot of enterprise software conversations suggest. Gabe Knuth looked at new Omdia research showing that Windows apps still outnumber browser-based apps in many organizations, even as workers spend much of their day in the browser. 🤖 Companies are using AI-enabled inferred sentiment in CX. So, what is AI-enabled inferred sentiment? It's basically automating the analysis of customer sentiment to glean deeper insights into how your customers are feeling. This process can supplant manual sentiment analysis, which frees up human agents to do other work. Because companies shouldn't rely exclusively on active customer feedback, like post-interaction surveys, which could muddy the view of customer sentiment. I’m not skeptical of AI. I'm skeptical of bad math. I was recently quoted in TechTarget on a question more companies should be asking before buying AI over investing in people: Is AI actually cheaper than people? Too often, the business case is built around a simple comparison: AI licensing + compute vs. employee salaries But that leaves out a lot. Integration. Data readiness. Human oversight. Quality assurance. Governance. Change management. Ongoing maintenance. Retraining. Exception handling. That’s where the real cost shows up. AI is not a one-time implementation. It’s an operating capability. And operating capabilities need budget, ownership, measurement, controls, and continuous investment. That doesn’t mean AI can’t create meaningful savings or productivity gains. It absolutely can. But AI-driven layoffs focus on the wrong things and don’t automatically translate into savings. If companies remove people before understanding the total cost of ownership, they may not be reducing cost. They may just be moving it somewhere harder to see. Thanks to Sean M.
