Today we're publishing State of the Startup Nation - Founder Edition. A founder-led reading of Northern Ireland's startup economy. Volume 01. On 6th May we ran the Techstars Belfast Community Development Lab at Ormeau Labs in partnership with QUBIS Ltd. Founders, investors, programme operators, government, universities, corporates, angels. Eight tables. Four themed sprints. Four hours. We used Brad Feld & Ian Hathaway's framework to structure the discussions and throughout kept putting founders at the centre of everything. What will help an entrepreneur move the needle. Granola transcribed every conversation. The quotes are anonymised and verbatim. What founders said in that room is not always what the conversation about Northern Ireland's startup economy currently says. The gap between those two things is the most useful finding in the document.  A few of the headlines: → The community here is unusually generous, and that is genuinely rare. Use it. → Cloudsmith proved you can build globally significant companies from Belfast without relocating. Eolas Medical, Axial3D, TeamFeePay, SciLeads are quietly approaching the same bracket in deliberately different shapes. → Most founders here benchmark too low. The peer group sets the pace, and the local pace is not the global one. → The best founders here are increasingly passing on grants. Grants are slow money with strings, and the best founders have worked out that chasing applications is not the same as chasing customers. The cheapest, fastest, most validating money is a paying customer. → The equity problem is real. The local funds don't write cheques at the angel level, and the angel ecosystem itself is small, opaque, and early. First money in is the roadblock. This is both public money crowding out private experimentation and an overall lack of experienced angels. Both the bright spots and the hard parts are true at the same time. Read them together.
