In 2025, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine published its Consensus Study Report, K–12 STEM Education and Workforce Development in Rural Areas. The report provides an insightful and thorough overview of federal programs that fund and support afterschool STEM in rural communities. It states, "Out-of-school learning opportunities in STEM are an important complement to in-school learning. While many students in rural communities lack access to opportunities in museums or other out-of-school institutions, they often do have access to STEM learning opportunities at home or in nature." New technologies bring new possibilities for undergraduate STEM curricula, as educators and students can benefit from these new tools. What can educators do to implement technology effectively in their courses? Opportunities for STEM learning in informal environments—such as museums, science centers, after-school programs, and beyond—have greatly expanded in the past 15 years and now serve as an essential part of the STEM education landscape. Join us for a public session of the Committee on Enhancing the Reach and Contributions of Informal STEM Learning that will include a discussion with the sponsor about priorities for the study. Although by statute they have less than $50 million in federal research expenditures annually, ERIs disproportionately educate the next generation of STEM worker, while driving innovation, building community engagement, and fueling local and national economic development.
