  • It is easy to perceive “health innovation” as apps and devices built to help the best-served. But the real innovation is in ideas that connect technology to people’s lives and support those working for the underserved.   Health innovations in India, for Indians, are happening across the spectrum — from device innovations to system-level improvements rooted in strong tech. These go from solving for the unavailability of a radiologist in a certain district to supporting Anganwadi workers track a child’s key health measurements more easily and accurately, to helping people access their health records at any hospital across India.   India’s innovators are rising to solve these problems, pioneering new ways to improve health.   Gates Foundation is proud to support these innovators and work alongside the government to help scale innovative, effective solutions that improve health and well-being for all.   India’s #NextGenHealth is being built for billions.

  • What if quality healthcare could travel farther than roads ever could? Across India, AI and digital innovation are helping reimagine how healthcare is delivered. By accelerating medicine discovery, enabling connected care and building stronger health systems, technology is helping bring timely, quality healthcare closer to millions. At the Gates Foundation, we work with governments, innovators, and partners to support solutions that can scale, so that geography is no longer a barrier. #NextGenHealth - Built for Billions

  • In India, every five seconds, someone goes blind. But in most cases, this is preventable if symptoms are caught early. Yet that’s precisely the challenge—limited access to eye care makes proactive treatment difficult. A 2025 survey by AIIMS Delhi finds that, on average, there is only one ophthalmologist for every 65,000 people in the country, and it goes up to 1:100000 in some regions of India. This is exactly what Remidio—proudly supported by the Gates Foundation—is working to solve. The company’s handheld, battery-powered retinal scanner is so innovative that it enables detection of eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and even complications of high-risk pregnancy, in just 10 seconds—even before symptoms surface. Remidio’s powerful use of AI equips frontline health workers with minimal training to use the device effectively. Watch the video to see how the future of digital health systems helps innovations reach the most remote places, building solutions with accessibility and inclusivity at their core. #NextGenHealth - Built for Billions Anand Sivaraman

  • Convergent innovation will be central to solving some of India’s most pressing development challenges. At the WIN Conclave, the discussion highlighted how the convergence of AI, quantum technologies, and biotechnology is opening new possibilities in healthcare, precision medicine, and beyond. Equally critical is the convergence of policy, institutions, and partnerships to translate this potential into impact. Moving from isolated excellence to collaborative, ecosystem-led innovation will be key. The Gates Foundation is proud to partner with the Wadhwani Foundation in advancing this shared vision for scalable, inclusive solutions towards a Viksit Bharat. Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India | Wadhwani Foundation | Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF)

Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood addressed the Wadhwani Innovation Network (WIN) Conclave on 15 May 2025, speaking on “Scaling Science for Social Good towards a Viksit Bharat: Vision for a Convergent Innovation Ecosystem.” He was joined by Dr Dr Shirshendu Mukherjee, Managing Director, Wadhwani Innovation Network; Dr Ajay Kela, Global CEO and Board Member, Wadhwani Foundation; and Dr Archna Vyas, India Country Director, Gates Foundation. In his inaugural address, Prof. Sood emphasised the convergent potential of frontier technologies such as AI-Quantum-Biotech convergence and the growing possibilities created by this, especially in healthcare, precision medicine, and advanced computing. Referring to convergence of governance and policy ecosystem and the various stakeholders, Prof. Sood noted that institutional mechanisms such as the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council and the Empowered Technology Group have helped shape initiatives and industry-academia partnerships including the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), National One Health Mission, and the Research, Development and Innovation Fund. Prof. Sood concluded by emphasising the need to move beyond isolated excellence towards broader collaboration and convergent innovation ecosystems.
