In India, every five seconds, someone goes blind. But in most cases, this is preventable if symptoms are caught early. Yet that’s precisely the challenge—limited access to eye care makes proactive treatment difficult. A 2025 survey by AIIMS Delhi finds that, on average, there is only one ophthalmologist for every 65,000 people in the country, and it goes up to 1:100000 in some regions of India. This is exactly what Remidio—proudly supported by the Gates Foundation—is working to solve. The company’s handheld, battery-powered retinal scanner is so innovative that it enables detection of eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and even complications of high-risk pregnancy, in just 10 seconds—even before symptoms surface.
