Why Healthcare Professionals Should Network — Now More Than Ever

Why Healthcare Professionals Should Network — Now More Than Ever

A few years ago, I was speaking at a conference for young cardiologists in Europe. After the talk, during the reception, I noticed a doctor standing by himself. Two attendees I’d been chatting with had been eyeing him but didn’t approach — they said he was well-known and they felt it wasn’t appropriate to do so.

So, I walked over and invited him to join us.

He did.

Later that night, one of the young doctors told me how incredible it was to sit next to “a rockstar in the cardiology world.” The older doctor quietly pulled me aside, too — he’d had a rough day in the OR and didn’t know anyone at the event. That connection made a difference for both of them.

That’s networking. Not the business-card kind. The human kind.

In healthcare, relationships matter more than ever. Whether you're a nurse, dentist, researcher, therapist, or med student, don't feel you need to wait for the "right time" to connect. It’s the people we meet, the conversations we start, and the kindness we offer that build the foundation for growth, learning, and even healing.

So go ahead — send that message. Start that chat. Invite someone in. Cardiologists literally open hearts; everyone can help someone open their heart metaphorically.

I’ve been lucky to work with organizations such as Massachusetts General Brigham, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School, Biotronik, Boston Scientific, and the European Cardiology Society, to name a few. How can I be a resource for you?
