The News Is Heavy — Here’s Where I Go When I Need a Smile

The other day, a friend told me she avoids watching the news because it drains her energy. “I just can’t take it,” she said. “It’s all so dark.” And honestly? I get it. Between global crises, local heartbreak, and the endless scroll of bad headlines, it’s a lot for anyone to take in.

On the other hand, I also feel staying informed is important. I personally like to know what’s happening in the world, even if it's uncomfortable. So instead of shutting it all out, I try to find a balance. I stay aware, but I also make time for things that lift me up.

Here’s my go-to happiness toolkit. These are the places I turn to when I need a pick-me-up, a smile, or just a reminder that there’s still good out there.

My Go-To Joy-Filled Corners of the Internet

1. Good News Network Feel-good stories from around the world. Just real people doing kind things, solving problems, and making the world better in quiet ways.

2. ZooBorns Baby animals from accredited zoos and aquariums. Who can stay grumpy after seeing a baby sloth wrapped in a blanket?

3. Awkward Family Photos A brilliant reminder that everyone has cringe-worthy moments, and laughter really is the best medicine.

4. Cross-eyed Cats on Pinterest Yes, this is a whole Pinterest board of cats with crossed eyes. It’s pure serotonin.

5. @thatgoodnewsgirl (TikTok / IG / YouTube) She shares the most wholesome stories with contagious joy.

6. The Kid Should See This Short videos on everything from space to sea creatures … technically for kids, but honestly? Delightful for everyone.

7. Penguin Cam at the Kansas City Zoo You’re welcome.

Some days, the world feels especially heavy. On those days, it’s okay to take a break, reset, and refill your cup.

What’s your go-to happiness fix? I’m always looking for new ones.
