Using LinkedIn Like a Marketer (Not a Job Seeker)

Most people treat LinkedIn like a digital filing cabinet; a place to park your resume and check in when you’re unemployed.

Marketers, on the other hand, treat it like a stage. They test ideas, share stories, and build awareness long before they ever ask for anything.

If you want to stand out in today’s job market, that’s the mindset to borrow. Because job hunting isn’t just about applying, it’s about being found.

The Job Seeker Mindset vs. The Marketer Mindset

The Job Seeker waits for openings, applies, and hopes the right person sees their resume. The Marketer builds visibility and credibility over time, so the right people already know their name when an opportunity opens.

It’s the difference between chasing and attracting.

How to Think Like a Marketer

You don’t need to become a “LinkedIn influencer” or post motivational quotes to stand out. You just need to approach your presence with intention.

  1. Share, don’t sell. Post about what you’re learning, noticing, or reflecting on in your search or industry. Insight is more interesting than self-promotion.
  2. Think consistency, not virality. You don’t need a viral post. You need visibility. Comment thoughtfully, post once or twice a week, and show up regularly.
  3. Tell micro-stories. Share small wins, lessons, or even observations. Marketers know people connect with moments, not monologues.
  4. Engage like a peer, not a pitch. When you comment on others’ posts, do it to contribute, not to be noticed. Genuine curiosity travels further than cleverness.

Why It Works

Recruiters and hiring managers spend more time on LinkedIn than on job boards. They’re scrolling, searching, and taking mental notes.

Every thoughtful post or comment is a signal that says: This person knows what they’re talking about. This person might be a good fit for our team.

When you show up consistently with something to say, even small things, people remember you.

The Takeaway

LinkedIn isn’t just where jobs are posted. It’s where credibility is built.

And like any good marketer, your goal isn’t to chase leads. It’s to attract the right ones.

So post your thoughts, share your lessons, and stay visible. The next opportunity might come from someone who’s already been reading your work.
