So, You've Been Ghosted...
There’s a special kind of tension that comes with waiting. You’ve sent the application, had the interview, written the thank-you email... and now, nothing.
No updates. No “we’ve decided to move forward.” Not even an automated reply. Just silence.
And because silence is an empty space, our brains rush to fill it, usually with the worst possible story.
Why It Feels So Personal
When you’re job hunting, everything starts to feel like a referendum on your worth. One unanswered email turns into a mental spiral: Did I say something wrong? Should I have sent a follow-up? Maybe I’m not as qualified as I thought.
But hiring processes are rarely that tidy. Teams change direction mid-search. Budgets shift. Someone forgets to send the update. Sometimes, it’s not rejection, it’s just delay.
What Silence Can Actually Mean
Silence doesn’t always equal “no.” Often, it means:
- They’re still deciding. Multiple candidates, conflicting schedules, shifting priorities.
- They’ve paused hiring. Internal changes happen constantly, most of which you’ll never see.
- They don’t have news yet. Many recruiters wait for official confirmation before reaching out.

It’s frustrating, but it’s not final.
How to Manage the Wait
You can’t control when (or if) someone replies, but you can control what you do with the waiting.
- Set a personal rule. For example: one follow-up after a week, then move on. It creates closure even if they never reply.
- Keep your pipeline moving. Apply to the next role, reach out to the next contact, schedule the next call. Motion builds momentum.
- Detach outcome from effort. Your value isn’t determined by response time. The silence is about them, not you.
The Takeaway
Rejection hurts. But silence? Silence just lingers. It’s easy to let it drain your confidence, but that pause between outreach and reply is where resilience grows.
Because every unanswered email is proof that you’re still in the arena, still showing up, still trying.
And that counts for more than most people realize.
