My Top 6 Excel Time Saving Tricks
Tip #1 Navigate quickly to the bottom of a list by double clicking the bottom border of the active cell. Double clicking the border of the active cell will automatically switch the active cell to the last contiguous cell in its range. So if you are somewhere near the bottom of the list, you can also double click the upper border to navigate to the top row. This works is all four directions, just be careful not to double click the small square autofill button which will copy the values/formulas downward.
Tip #2 Copy a worksheet tab by holding down the Control key and dragging it to a new location. You will see a little + sign icon appear to display the copy. It is helpful to make a copy of a spreadsheet first if you plan on making changes because you will then leave a backup copy behind. Right click to hide the unwanted worksheet if desired.
Tip #3 Edit multiple worksheets at once. Group the worksheets with pressing the Control key and selecting them individually or use the Shift key to select a range of worksheets. For example if you wanted to add a new expense item to 12 months of worksheets, first click the January tab, then press Shift and click the December tab. All the worksheets will be grouped and you can insert rows, modify formulas, and make formatting changes to all at once. Note that when you have two or more worksheets selected, you will see [group] on the title bar. Ungroup worksheets by right clicking a worksheet and choosing ungroup sheets.
Tip #4 Customize your favorite Excel buttons with a unique shortcut key on the Quick Access Toolbar. The Quick Access Toolbar by default has three commands, Save, Undo, and Redo. Add others to it by right clicking your favorite command on the Ribbon, and choosing Add to Quick Access Toolbar. Anytime you press the Alt key, you will see the numbers 1, 2, 3, etc, overlaid on the commands of the Quick Access Toolbar. Press the number that corresponds with command you want and the shortcut will activate the button. You can change the order of the commands from Excel Options.
Tip #5 Use the AutoSum shortcut key by pressing Alt + =.
Tip # 6 Enter today's date with the keyboard shortcut Control + Semi Colon.
