How do you bring value to the organization?
How do you bring value to the organization?
I was discussing on this with a good friend of mine a few weeks ago, and after our conversation, this question kind of stayed with me. Indeed, how does one bring value to the organization? This is a question I started asking all candidates who applied for a job on my team, eager to hear their responses.
As a motivational speaker, what do I say to an audience on this topic? And, if I am the audience, what do I reply to this question?
In fact, do I want to reply to this question at all? Yes, this question is necessary to help us explore ways to perform better, be more aligned with our organization's goals, and deliver our best. But, do I want to define the four, or five, or ten parameters along which I perceive my value addition to the organization? Do I want to set that boundary of excellence within which I will continue to operate? Putting it differently, do I want to define my unique ways of bringing value to the company, once and for all, and stick it on my cubicle panel to look at every day and be motivated?
I do not want to do that. If I define my ways and contributions, then, in a way I define my limits. I give a pattern to my behavior. That is easy. No, I want this question to stay with me. I want to breathe this question as soon as I enter my office. I do not want to put it on paper and be done with it. Each day is a new beginning and each day I must re-invent myself. Find new ways to contribute, bring original thought and creativity to my work. There will be new projects, issues, events every day. Whenever I start a project, respond to a situation, attend a meeting, I want to think this question. I want to add value each day, every minute, and which is tailored as per those challenges! So, I want that this question stays with me, and that I find a new answer every time.
If you know what you can do, you will do only that much. If you do not know what you can do, you can scale mountains! So, I am not defining my ways to add value. Each day I will explore and grow….and add value!! :-D.
I welcome you to share your thoughts on how we can go beyond the obvious, on this topic.
Good thoughts, and I do agree! I would also considering taking a two pronged approach of defining how I can create value, while making sure that it is not a close ended loop.
Adding value to organization is directly related to adding value to the culture of the organization. As a leader it is a responsibility to build a culture of responsibility and positivity. Where everybody from office boy to CEO exactly knows how he/she is contributing to organization and his/her role is critical in shaping up of the organization. Hiring best of the talents is not challenge .The challenge is making them work together as a team so that one plus one is not two but 11. The culture of "WE CAN" , The culture of "Every problem has a hidden solution and opportunity" , The culture of "WE can always achieve more than I".
So true. We are usually limited by what we think we can do.
