Before CGI, before safety rigs, before anyone knew what “VFX” meant — one man rewrote the rules of filmmaking with nothing but timing and courage. Buster Keaton’s stunts from the 1920s weren’t just impressive — they were insane. No green screens. No digital trickery. Every fall, jump, and near-death moment was completely real. He turned physical danger into cinematic poetry, influencing generations of directors, stunt performers, and storytellers. Nearly a century later, filmmakers still study his work and ask the same question: Which Buster Keaton stunt shocked you the most? Saying something has "No CGI" or "No VFX" in a film/show is not cool, especially when there's obvious CGI/VFX in them and there are even credits countering these statements. You're essentially insulting and slapping an entire hard-working department in the face and seemingly trying to discredit and erase them. We are here, we always have been, so please for the love of filmmaking, stop this trend. We can all appreciate practical approaches, but VFX exists in ways that many people forget so please remember that we're all collaborating artists and we all deserve respect for one another's craft without trying to erase each other's contributions. #vfx #filmmaking #television #visualeffects

Intentional film-making in a time of acceleration The Swedish Union for Performing Arts and Film organised a talk at the Soho House this evening during Stockholm international film festival. The topic was largely about AI and how it reshapes conditions for a lot of film workers in a time of new formats and shrinking resources. The panel consisting of a fellow cinematographer, director and screenwriter echoed very much of what the audience was thinking. There is AI, we use it as a tool in our work but the bigger elephant in the room is this avalanche of constantly new formats and adaptations and the rules by which they are experienced. On top of that a cycle of funding that is largely withdrawn and artistic expression questioned in what value it actually brings. The state of the industry is exceptionally difficult, needless to say across all areas. In all honesty, when I hear that there are millions funnelled into microdramas as the latest thing where a season can consist of 100 2-minute episodes this has a direct opposite effect on me. I fail to see how I will ever be able to appreciate this way of experiencing a story. I might not be the target group either. But it instinctively makes me wonder how we got there in the first place while it also pushes me in trying to find a different way onwards. While there is a literal war for the primacy of senses and attention deficit seem to have reached its climax I keep hearing a lot of voices that say they had enough of it all. Not in the sense of nostalgia or returning to some state of mind (or industry) that once was but an appreciation for the personal, the tactile and most importantly - tangible and lasting experiences. In a time where Paul Virilios term “dromology”, a study on the logic of speed but also the impact that speed can have feels more relevant than ever. There is no doubt information and how we consume it is only accelerating, no matter the medium. I personally fight what I describe as attention cycles that seem to overlap, one on top of another and replace them with intentional and focused experiences. Be it a book or a film lasting a good 2hrs 45min in the cinema without a single interruption. How then do we approach a way out of this acceleration and in an industry where a lot of people, me included, quite frankly feel we don’t have the means to navigate in? While embracing that everything will always evolve I think we need to be intentional in everything we do and dare to have a clear voice rather than assuming the homogeneous flow of what we might think is a sense of direction. Dare to express all ideas, allowing to question them and not fearing something is not right - or wrong. And embrace imperfection! These are the reflections I have on a late night train journey northbound through Sweden. #filmindustry #reflections #ai #socialmedia
