The Spacecraft Destroyed by Units In 1999, NASA launched the $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter. It never arrived. The spacecraft burned up in Mars atmosphere because of a math mistake. One engineering team used metric units (newtons), while another used imperial units (pounds of force). The mismatch went unnoticed. FALCON 9 LEAVES NASA’S SPACE SHUTTLE IN THE DUST SpaceX’s Falcon 9 just did what NASA’s Space Shuttle couldn’t in 3 decades. In 2025 alone, the reusable rocket is set to fly 140+ missions, launching over 2,000 metric tons of payload into orbit, more than the entire 30-year Shuttle program’s 1,360 tons. Falcon 9 went from just 2 launches in 2013 to over 100 in 2024, now owning 90% of all mass sent to orbit worldwide. Each launch costs under $30M, compared to the Shuttle’s $450M price tag, proof that reusable rockets didn’t just change the game, they rewrote the rulebook.
