Headquartered in El Segundo, Viridian Space Corporation has been awarded a $1.7 million Phase II SBIR contract from the United States Space Force to advance its air-breathing propulsion technology for satellites operating in very low Earth orbit (VLEO). The system is designed to enable spacecraft to draw on ambient atmospheric oxygen at altitudes between roughly 150 km and 500 km, allowing for extended mission durations, in-orbit maneuvering, and refueling without the need to carry all propellant at launch. Viridian plans to build and ground-test the propulsion system over the next two years, with an in-space demonstration targeted for 2027 to achieve full on-orbit validation. #verylowearthorbit #airbreathingpropulsion https://lnkd.in/eaTZtnAR

Last night, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched 21 satellites to low Earth orbit for Space Development Agency. According to SpaceNews, "This was the second deployment of satellites for SDA’s mesh network known as the Transport Layer." Their coverage reminds readers why SDA was established: "The Space Development Agency was established in 2019 to break the Pentagon’s reliance on large geostationary satellites by instead deploying networks of smaller spacecraft in low Earth orbit built using commercial components and rapid acquisition methods."
