The Medical Office and Senior Housing project is a great example of what can be accomplished with a strong development team and true partnership with the City of Laguna Hills. Project approval required collaboration, technical rigor, and a shared commitment to thoughtful planning. For this mixed-use site, our team prepared the Traffic Impact Study and developed a comprehensive parking strategy that blended: • ULI shared parking methodology • Real-world observed parking data • City parking requirements By aligning these elements, we created a plan that provides adequate parking while supporting efficient circulation and safe access for patients, residents, visitors, and employees. This project reflects what engineering excellence looks like in practice and demonstrates our core values in action: Synergy through collaboration, Solutions grounded in data, and Service to our clients and community. As we wrap up National Engineers Week, we are highlighting work that reflects how DKS Associates supports safer, more connected travel. In Bend, Oregon, DKS provided transportation engineering services for the City of Bend’s Olney Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements project between Wall Street and 2nd Street. This east-west corridor crosses the Deschutes River and the BNSF railroad and serves as a key connection for the community. DKS reviewed pedestrian Level of Traffic Stress and traffic operations and identified multimodal opportunities, constraints, and alternatives to improve accessibility, safety, and comfort. Recommended upgrades included a protected bike intersection at Wall Street and Olney Avenue, a protected bike lane, and an enhanced crossing at 2nd Street. DKS also delivered plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic signal and lighting design and temporary traffic control, and is serving as Engineer of Record during construction. The project received the 2025 ITE Oregon Section Project of the Year award, recognizing the value of practical, people-focused transportation solutions. This is the kind of work DKS engineers deliver every day: clear analysis, thoughtful design, and close collaboration with public agency partners to help communities function better now and plan for what comes next. Engineers Week 2026 | Transform Your Future Engineering does not just shape infrastructure. It shapes how we move through our communities every day. Through the City of Pittsburgh’s Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program, our transportation engineers are developing eight traffic calming construction plans for priority residential corridors across the city. The work includes signing and pavement marking improvements, speed humps, flexposts, traffic circles, and other context-sensitive design elements aimed at addressing safety concerns on neighborhood streets. From field data collection and base mapping to final construction documents prepared to City and PennDOT standards, our team is helping turn community concerns into practical, buildable solutions. Traffic calming is about more than markings on pavement. It is about creating safer streets for children walking to school, neighbors crossing the road, and families riding bikes in their own communities. We are continuing #NationalEngineersWeek with Vanessa Spatafora, P.E., a third-generation engineer! For Vanessa, a University of Florida alum who has been with Corradino for 15 years, engineering is about improving quality of life—creating safer, more connected communities through thoughtful, creative transportation solutions. Her days are split between the field and the office, where she helps shape mobility options that serve everyone in the community, from kids to seniors. What she loves most is the creativity transportation engineering allows—thinking outside the box and implementing innovative ideas to build more sustainable, accessible systems at home. Vanessa is especially proud of her in-house work with the Miami-Dade TPO, contributing to planning efforts that drive long-term, meaningful impact. One thing she wishes people better understood? Engineering isn’t just technical—it’s mission-driven. At its core, all engineering is about improving our roads, bridges, and communities for both today and the future. Her advice to future engineers: Try everything. Don’t specialize too early. And a fun fact—engineering runs in the family. ⭐ Spotlight on the 2026 ACEC WA Engineering Excellence Awards National Gold winner in the Structural Systems Category! HDR, your project of the SR 520 Montlake Lid and Bridges for the Washington State Department of Transportation will go on to compete at the national American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Engineering Excellence Awards in Washington, D.C. in May! Built in the early 1960s, the old State Route (SR) 520 serves as a vital link across Union Bay, connecting Montlake to the floating bridge, and on to Bellevue and Redmond. Built on hollow columns, the bridge was vulnerable to earthquakes and the highway’s location divided the Montlake community. Its four-lane design reached capacity during peak periods. The $487 million SR 520 Montlake Lid and Bridges Project replaces the aging West Approach Bridge South and reconnects the Montlake community with a landscaped lid and multi-modal land bridge over the highway. Situated atop one of Washington’s most complex interchanges, the highway’s nine travel lanes rank third in the Seattle region for throughput, include multiple turning movements, and converge regional and local bus routes in a constrained footprint. The project restores green space, improves walking and biking connections, supports regional transit and future light rail, and adds three acres of new public open space—all with resilient seismic design and careful construction that keeps traffic moving through major challenges. The project also connects to the floating bridge. The floating bridge’s southern approach structure integrates unique seismic isolation bearings that reduced the number of piers in the water; allowed longer, prestressed girders; and enables the structure to remain in service immediately following a 1,000-year earthquake. This project is the first phase of WSDOT's the “Rest of the West” — the final improvements to the $5.9 billion SR 520 program.
