Waymo published something last week that I can't stop thinking about. SceneDiffuser++ — it's a world model that simulates entire city-scale trips for self-driving cars. Not just a car on a road. The whole scene: other cars, pedestrians, traffic lights, agents appearing and disappearing as you'd expect in a real city. They're calling the vision "CitySim." Give it a map and two points, and it generates an entire city between them and simulates your drive through. Previous approaches bolted together separate modules — one for scene setup, another for behavior prediction, another for handling occlusion. This trains everything end-to-end on one loss function. Here's why I find this interesting: AVs need billions of test miles. Real-world testing costs a fortune and takes forever. Simulation helps, but only if it's realistic enough that what the car learns actually transfers. A model that can spin up coherent, city-scale scenarios on demand moves that needle. Paper's at CVPR 2025. If you're following autonomous vehicles, worth a read. #AutonomousDriving #WorldModels #Simulation

Waymo is leveraging Genie-3 to simulate hyper-realistic driving scenarios that their cars have never encountered in the real world, such as a meteor hitting the road or a mattress falling off a truck. By using this generated video, Waymo is able to train their driving models on a much wider range of situations than would be possible with real-world driving alone. This approach allows for more comprehensive and efficient testing, ultimately leading to safer and more reliable autonomous vehicles.
