Huge team effort as we celebrate a fantastic milestone: digitising 100 million historical newspaper pages, adding to one of the world's most significant, searchable, newspaper archives, The British Newspaper Archive. We have so much to learn from history and it feels very prescient to be preserving important stories, making these accessible and safeguarding important moments of Britain's heritage. Here's to continuing to connect our communities to what matters. Lee Wilkinson The British Library British Newspaper Archive Findmypast DC Thomson
A landmark moment for heritage digitisation in the UK Today, I’m incredibly proud to share that Findmypast and the British Newspaper Archive - created through our long-running partnership with The British Library - have reached 100 million fully searchable historical newspaper pages. This is one of the world’s largest and longest-running digitisation projects, spanning 15 years and currently containing over 2,700 newspaper titles dating back to 1699. Every single digitised page adds depth to the story of Britain, Ireland, and communities around the world. This milestone reflects what long-term collaboration can achieve. Together with The British Library and major publishers including Reach PLC, Iliffe, and National World, we've worked to preserve fragile print records and open them up for everyone — from researchers and educators to local historians, genealogists and families. As a business with over 120 years of history in publishing newspapers that serve communities across the UK, it feels especially fitting that the 100 millionth page comes from one of DC Thomson’s own titles, the Dundee Courier. I feel very proud to build on this legacy through this archive, opening access to history as it happened. A huge thank you to the teams at the British Library’s Boston Spa facility, our content acquisition specialists, technologists, librarians, and historians who made this possible. Your expertise and passion have brought 100 million pages of history into the digital age. I encourage you all to dive in and discover something new for free until 16th Feb: the everyday stories, global events, and untold moments that shaped the world around us. (https://lnkd.in/e7wkkwRz)
