North Dakota’s aerospace momentum continues. New partnerships with GrandSky and AeroVironment (AV) are pushing the frontier of counter-UAS defense work — and rightfully so. But as we celebrate the next chapter, let’s also remember how the story began. Long before leases were signed or runways repurposed, Bruce G. Gjovig, then Director of the UND Center for Innovation, envisioned something radical: a UAS complex west of the base that could align civilian ingenuity with national defense. Sigma Defense Systems has acquired Aries Defense, a company specialising in tactical video and sensor integration, to expand its command-and-control and ISR capabilities at the tactical edge. Aries’ technology connects UAVs, cameras and unattended sensors in secure, low-connectivity environments — systems already used by the US Marine Corps. Sigma plans to fold these capabilities into its Olympus platform, enabling more resilient, software-defined CJADC2 operations and improved situational awareness where connectivity is limited or contested. It’s Sigma’s third acquisition in two years focused on CJADC2 integration — following Juno Technologies and EWA — signalling a clear bet on multi-domain data fusion as the future of military command networks.
