How does traditional publishing build credibility for writers? Being accepted by a recognised publishing house means a manuscript has passed rigorous editorial and quality standards. This enhances trust among readers and strengthens an author’s professional reputation. Traditional publishing also provides structured marketing, wider distribution, and bookstore presence—key factors that contribute to long-term visibility and authority. Many manuscripts fail not because they are poorly written, but because they become too safe. In a new article for Stories Rule Press, Mark Posey examines “the comfortable manuscript”—the moment when dialogue becomes less risky, conflict is softened, and characters begin making the reasonable choice instead of the revealing one. The result is often a manuscript that is technically sound, professionally written, and ultimately forgettable. The article explores why readers respond to friction, tension, and emotional risk, and why the scenes that make writers uncomfortable are often the ones with the greatest power. For writers, editors, and anyone interested in storytelling craft, it’s a thoughtful reminder that polishing a manuscript should not mean sanding away everything that makes it memorable. A hard and relevant mandate for all creative types from the great John Fante, whose work has never been properly appreciated: “I think the one thing that a writer must avoid is bitterness. I think it’s the one fault that can destroy him. It can shrivel him up…I’ve fought it all my life.” #writing #writerslife

The hardest part of writing for many writers is carving out time to write. We are constantly busy and constantly distracted with work, business, and family. One mistake a lot of writers make is thinking that writing isn't worth it unless you can sit down and concentrate on it for an hour or more, but that thinking will often lead you to not writing at all. In many cases, 20-30 minutes is all a writer can carve out from their schedule at any given time, but if used productively, it can be very beneficial and extremely productive. Sit down, use a timer, and try it for yourself. #writingtip #writerslife #writeyourbook #beproductive
