One of the hardest things to practice is not giving—but receiving. In this episode of Walk Talk Listen, I speak with Lorenz Sell, co-founder of Sutra, about humility, receiving, and how experiences like Burning Man quietly reshaped the way he thinks about technology, community, and learning. What happens when familiar roles fall away and we are invited to show up without control, status, or performance? Our conversation explores how difficult it can be to receive attention, care, and support, and why receiving is not passive, but a deeply relational practice. We also reflect on how the digital spaces we design influence our capacity to listen, to slow down, and to be changed by one another. This conversation reminded me that receiving is not something we do once we understand, but it’s something we practice by listening a little longer. It is a feature, not a bug. In this clip, we talk about an idea that reframes mistakes, hesitation, and unfinished work. Something creators learn slowly, if they learn it at all. Perfection is not the lesson. If you want to understand where this thinking comes from. And why it matters for creativity, confidence, and learning. If your biggest competitor decided to raise their prices tomorrow… would that scare you? Or would it expose you? That’s the question most business owners avoid — because deep down, they know the truth. They’re not losing because of pricing… they’re losing because they’re playing small. It's time to listen and learn why trying to compete is the fastest way to get buried, why undercharging is killing your confidence, and why the businesses winning right now are the ones that become undeniable, not “affordable.” If 2026 is going to be the year you stop hiding behind discounts and finally step into your value, this episode is the one that forces the shift. Real talk: I used to attract toxic clients because I was living out of alignment. When you're operating from fear and scarcity, you make decisions that aren't aligned with your truth. Been there, done that, learned the hard way. In the latest Honest Brew episode, Cheale Villa, PCC, Sara Bradley, and I are spilling the tea on toxic clients—and how to protect your energy before it's too late. Here's what we're unpacking: ✨ Why alignment isn't something you start with—it's something you learn ✨ The difference between clients who are just scattered vs. actually toxic ✨ How to spot red flags in discovery calls (hint: let them talk) ✨ Why saying "you're not ready yet" is actually the kindest thing you can do This conversation is for anyone who's said yes when everything in their gut screamed NO. Simple? Yes. Easy? Absolutely not. But protecting your brand, your boundaries, and your sanity is always worth it. You know… there’s this belief in L&D circles. That the business doesn’t really respect the function. That learning is tolerated, sometimes appreciated, but rarely trusted in the same way as other parts of the organization. Jess Almlie flips that idea on its head: It’s not so much that the business is ignoring L&D, but that over time, through our own habits and choices, we train it in how to work with us and what to expect from us. We don’t just respond to the business. Over time, we teach the business how to approach us. When we accept requests without slowing the conversation down. When we deliver exactly what’s asked, even when we sense it won’t solve the real problem. When our measures of success lean more toward activity than change. None of this comes from poor intent. It usually comes from wanting to be helpful, wanting to be reliable, wanting to keep things moving. But those choices add up. They shape expectations about what L&D is there to do, and what it isn’t. In the latest Learning+ episode, Jess and I spend time unpacking how these patterns form, and what it actually takes to change them without confrontation or grand declarations. The shift, as she puts it, starts with noticing our own habits before trying to change anyone else’s. The episode goes live on Monday, 22nd December. If you’ve ever wondered why L&D struggles to be seen as strategic, this conversation offers a perspective worth sitting with.
