⏰ Y2K38 is not a bug, but a record-scale vulnerability The Epochalypse problem (https://lnkd.in/eDSmeMtf) will sound familiar to those who remember the Y2K issue. On January 19, 2038, 32-bit signed integer overflow will occur in *nix systems that store the number of seconds since the Unix epoch (January 1, 1970). Systems that haven’t been updated will revert to 1970, causing unpredictable behavior. The key difference from Y2K is scale. The number of systems needing updates is orders of magnitude higher than the computers affected in the 20th century. While there’s a time buffer of over 12 years, it’s likely insufficient, especially since no government or international body is centrally addressing the issue. Cybersecurity researchers warn it’s not necessary to wait until 2038 to exploit this overflow. Systems with time manipulation vulnerabilities can be exploited through NTP protocol attacks or GPS spoofing. For example, CVE-2025-55068 (CVSS 8.8) affects remote fuel management systems in Dover ProGauge MagLink, causing denial of service. Many more similar CVEs are expected. https://lnkd.in/eTR44-_P Viewing the 2038 problem as a vulnerability has practical benefits, allowing the use of vulnerability management methodologies. Since it's likely impossible to remediate everywhere, start with asset inventories to identify *nix versions and software; then prioritize.
