After much criticism amid a proliferation of AI-generated videos depicting missile strikes across the Middle East, X has said users trying to pass such content off as real could face suspension from the platform. X's head of products, Nikita Bier said the changes would apply mainly to the social media platform's creator revenue-sharing programme, which allows for eligible people to earn money from posts. I recently spoke with KSL TV's "Get Gephardt" about how easy it has become for bad actors to create convincing AI deepfakes and why that should concern all of us. Olympic athletes are now targets. There's so much publicly available footage of them that generating a fake is trivial. One woman bought counterfeit weight loss pills because a deepfake of Oprah endorsed them. A video can be completely real and still be a lie. That's what makes disinformation harder than deepfakes. With deepfakes, the media itself is fabricated. You can detect it. With disinformation, the video is real. The quote is real. The person is real. But the context is stripped. The date is wrong. The headline says the opposite of what actually happened. This spreads faster than any correction ever will. False news travels six times faster than true news on social media. Not because people are malicious. Because misleading content is engineered to trigger emotion. Outrage. Fear. Pride. At DeepGuard, we started with deepfakes. But disinformation is the wider battlefield.
