Pro-Tip for writers: Be aware it’s a “thing” when a publication flat out declines your work without reading it — an easy way to pad their % of acceptance stats. A lower acceptance statistic makes an editor feel more exclusive and literary. There are enough “things” in this line of work that make a writer feel like rubbish without editorial gameplay. Don’t be discouraged. Put that publication on a “don’t send anymore” list and move on. Don’t need them, don’t read them. ~M #writers #writing #protips #tip

Writers: If someone is offering you "exposure" rather than cold hard cash to write something for them, consider this: If their website/publication isn't successful enough for them to pay writers fairly, then it isn't gonna give you much exposure either. #writing #freelancewriting #honesttruth #IsaidwhatIsaid #payyourwriters

Let's quell the confusion about "show" vs. "tell" in writing. This one change can not only elevate your writing, but reduce the cost of hiring an editor. The more changes an editor sees that they need to make, the more they'll charge you. #writers #authors #book #publishing #coach #writing #editing

With so much riding on a story’s first few pages, it’s no wonder authors often get caught up in a never-ending first chapter editing loop. As the story develops, the beginning will have to change to match. Read my latest blog post for strategies on how to keep writing forward while holding space to strengthen the story hook. One of the quickest ways to elevate your writing is to cut the phrase “began to.” Writers often use it as a mental transition, our brains easing into an action. But on the page, it just adds clutter. Instead of writing “She began to run,” try “She ran.” It’s cleaner, more confident, and gets straight to the action. If you’re revising a draft, do a quick search for “began to.” You might be surprised how many you can cut—and how much stronger your writing feels once you do. #WritingTips #Editing #WritingCommunity #WritersLife #FictionWriting #AmWriting

Experts, I have bad news. As an editor, I regret to inform you: you’ve buried your ‘so what’. Experts writing about their specialisms tend to start with context – the history, the caveats, the background. It’s interesting. It’s accurate. But… so what? You can’t wait until the fifth paragraph to land your ‘so what’. Right away, you need to tell your audience two things: 1. What this is about 2. Why they should be interested Then you can step back into the warm bath of context and background (but not for too long please). The more someone knows about a subject, the harder all this can be. It can feel like dumbing down. But the ‘so what’ isn’t about dumbing down – it’s about getting to the point before your readers stop looking for it. #writing #editing #clarity

This is one of the most common things I correct in messages crafted by department heads. In a five-paragraph message, the first four give background while the fifth holds the "why" of the message. Many readers will tune out before reaching the "why/so what." This is one reason former journalists make great communication specialists; they learn early that you "don't bury the lead/lede."

So much this! A good way to approach writing for B2B audiences is to think of the TL;DR angle. What does your audience need to know straight off the bat? I had someone say focus on the "why now" angle. Sure, but before that, answer the most basic question: Why? #b2btechnologywriting #technologywriting #contentmarketing
