I'm seeing many organisations grapple with VMware changes, and a new independent survey from Virtified confirms it: half of users plan to reduce their reliance by 2028. This is largely driven by Broadcom's shift to bundling VMware's Cloud Foundation 9 (VCF 9) into a single, take-it-or-leave-it package. For many, especially in the public sector and NHS Wales, this is causing real cost pressures and unwanted complexity. The survey, from former Gartner analyst Michael Warrilow, highlights some tough realities organisations are now facing: - A forced migration to VCF 9 risks ballooning budgets with features that users didn't ask for or want unified. - Trying to scale down a VMware estate could even result in reduced discounts from Broadcom, or none at all. - The October 2027 end-of-support for VMware 8.x means tough choices are looming: reluctantly upgrade, risk an unsupported environment, or plan a strategic pivot. Broadcom is hoping many will find migration lands in the "too hard basket." However, for public sector leaders, this is a pivotal moment. It's a real chance to look beyond the immediate licensing headache and re-evaluate the entire virtualisation strategy to optimise costs, reduce technical debt, and strengthen resilience.
