I once had a publisher ask me to remove a metaphor because it might offend a hypothetical reader. I said no. Not because I’m reckless but because art isn’t supposed to feel safe. We’re living in the age of “polished to death” manuscripts, where every rough edge gets filed off until no one feels anything. Sensitivity readers can be brilliant mirrors when used right but not muzzles. The goal isn’t to sanitize your truth; it’s to strengthen it. Representation matters. But so does courage. As writers, we walk the line between awareness and authenticity. Cross it wrong, and you’re tone-deaf. Stay too far back, and you’re voiceless. If an editor��s not getting back to you, or if you have to follow up more than three times, it’s time to move on. The experience of shopping a manuscript lends great insight into whether an editor thinks they can sell your book. Rejections, in my experience, have much more to do with lack of author platform or a book not being a good fit for a given publisher than they do with the quality of the author’s writing.

An internet acquaintance asked for an estimate to edit his manuscript. I multiplied the word count by my standard rate and came up with an estimate. His response was that was rather high, considering the manuscript was for his first book. What that acquaintance doesn't understand is that it doesn't matter whether the project is a first book or a 100th book. The application of my time, effort, and skill doesn't change. That acquaintance also doesn't understand that it's he, the self-publishing author, who decides whether his book is worthy of the investment in its quality. I cannot guarantee that professional editing will result in profit for him through increased book sales. No one can. However, the absence of proper editing will dissuade potential readers from buying the book. Either readers will leave scathing reviews about the lack of editing or potential readers will see the errors in book's cover copy or even in the first pages when reading a sample. Like the salt used to season a dish, good editing is invisible: readers don't notice it unless it's not there. #henhousepublishing #editing
