On what would have been Steve Jobs’ 71st birthday, Former Gap CEO 'Mickey' Drexler remembers one thing about his leadership: persistence. In 1999, Jobs asked Drexler to join Apple’s board. Drexler said no. A year later, Jobs asked again — and proposed a trade: If Drexler joined Apple, he’d join the Gap board. That partnership would go on to influence the creation of the Apple Store. How has persistence made the difference in your career? Share in the comments.
Millard 'Mickey' Drexler, am fond of sharing with early-career professionals the story about the day when steve jobs (as a new member of the board) spoke at a managers’ gathering at gap-inc headquarters in san francisco, and suggested the divisions — gap, old navy and banana republic — all consider linking to one another via their individual websites, a controversial idea at the time (b/c of the internal rivalry among them), that made a lot of sense to me, as part of creating an integrated/seamless experience for different categories of consumers within the same company (the two of you taught me so much at an early age — thank you)!
Persistence is what gets you in the room, brains is what keeps you there.
Thanks for this. Is there more to this interview and if so, where can we see it? Thanks.
I will never forget a whirlwind couple of days chasing Millard 'Mickey' Drexler up and down I-40 in North Carolina while working at J.Crew in the early aughts. What a time to be in retail. Thank you Mickey.
