Did you get passed over for a promotion? Respond strategically by asking for the data, says Carla Harris, a world-renowned career and leadership expert. Start with your manager and anyone else who was at the decision table. Try this script: “To get promoted, I needed to do A, B and C. Here are three examples I delivered A, B and C. I’m obviously missing something. What would make this an easy decision next time?” If you hear “it wasn’t your time,” widen the circle to two or three stakeholders, create a safe space, and listen for the real feedback. Don’t debate it. Receive it. Data is your friend. What’s one move that helped you get to the next level? Absolutely ask for feedback, but also make sure you are in the best place for your overall development while having a leader who seems genuinely interested in your growth. Early in my career, I was constantly passed over for promotions. Sadly, I was a young manager and although I grew and developed, that improvement was overlooked. I asked for feedback many times and was met with very little data. Moving to another organization, I was able to get promoted 3 times in half the time I was at my other job. Sadly, sometimes the environment you are in may not be the best friend to your long-term goals.

Asking for clarity instead of validation is such a mindset shift. Real growth starts when we listen to feedback without defending ourselves.

Defensiveness blocks growth; curiosity accelerates it. Grateful for experts like her sharing the playbook.

Carla Harris is the OG in career development and a firm favourite but sometimes it’s not a gap in your knowledge it’s the wrong direction, wrong environment or they don’t see you as a leader in that environment. Sometimes it’s your boss who is the biggest gatekeeper to your progress. That’s why a skip level sponsorship is essential.
