Why teachers can't access CPD: a call for change

Did you know that one in ten teachers and leaders told us that they lack confidence in selecting their own CPD? We surveyed over 1000 education professionals in England for our recent report to gain a clear understanding of what professional development currently looks and feels like on the ground. Too often, these assessments are seen as mere check-box exercises rather than meaningful opportunities for growth. This session explores how assessments used for programmatic improvement and accreditation can also provide tangible benefits to students. Participants will share innovative approaches to motivating students in assessment settings, providing valuable insights into effective motivation strategies. Sherry will also share about institutions awarding digital badges based on testing proficiency, which can not only demonstrate accountability but also empower learners to showcase their skills to potential employers, making assessments a win-win for both institutions and students.

On 18 November, Mindful Education's Mark McKenna will be hosting a breakout session at the Association of Colleges Annual Conference 2025 exploring the increasing role of education technology within Ofsted inspections. Pitt School of Social Work Continuing Education select courses now available nationwide! The University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work Office of Professional and Continuing is now an approved ACE provider. Select courses offered by the School of Social Work are now approved through the Association of Social Work Board's Approved Continuing Education (ASWB ACE) program, which is accepted in most jurisdictions in the United States and Canada. In a recent report from the Teacher Development Trust, it has been revealed that despite around £1 billion being spent each year on CPD in England, nearly 40% of teachers and leaders say CPD has not clearly improved their ability to perform their role, around one in five teachers spent less than a single day on formal CPD and only 24% of teachers say CPD adequately considers the needs of students. Currently Literacy and English, Literacy and Gàidhlig, HWB and Science appear to be the starting focus for reform.... According to the Scottish Government "We are improving education and training in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Scotland's schools, colleges and universities. This will enable and encourage more Scots to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for helping to grow Scotland's economy." Can Education Scotland tell us when Technology, Engineering and Mathematics will become a focus or are they hoping that Science alone will grow Scotland's economy. Does the shortage of Teachers in the Technologies and Mathematics Curriculum areas mean that Education Scotland is putting reform in these areas to the back of the queue ?

A national survey on SEND Continuous Professional Development (CPD), funded by nasen/Whole School SEND as part of the Department for Education School Workforce project, highlighted a key insight: most educators value SEND‑focused CPD, yet gaps remain between what is accessible, what is preferred, and what truly makes an impact. The study found that CPD is most effective when it combines expert consultation, mentoring, observation, and practical, school‑based application. At the Eden Academy Trust, this reinforces our belief that investing in our people drives excellence for pupils and communities. Through Eden People, colleagues can Learn, Connect, and Belong.
