Why I Prioritize Team Chemistry Over Just Skills When hiring, the ideal candidate has both the right skills and the right mindset. But if I have to choose, I’ll take team chemistry over technical skills every time. Skills can be taught. The ability to collaborate, communicate, and uplift a team? That’s much harder to develop. A highly skilled individual who doesn’t align with the team’s culture can slow things down, create friction, or even derail progress. On the other hand, someone with the right mindset—who’s curious, adaptable, and a natural team player—can grow into the role and elevate those around them. I’ve seen firsthand how the right chemistry fuels innovation, trust, and momentum. It’s what turns a group of talented individuals into a high-performing team. Of course, both skills and chemistry are ideal—but when push comes to shove, I’d rather invest in someone who fits the team and help them sharpen their skills than hire a rockstar who can’t collaborate. I accidentally got involved in a police sting operation. Sometimes, life surprises you in unexpected ways. My wife’s family owns a towing company, and from time to time, I help out at the office when someone calls out sick. So there I was, grabbing a cup of coffee in the kitchen, when I returned to find five sheriff deputies huddled around our security monitor. Turns out, a suspect was coming to pick up a car that had been involved in a retail shoplifting ring—and the local law enforcement was ready to make an arrest as soon as they showed up. Now, how did I get involved? I ended up being the one who had to speak with the suspect at the window, trying to keep things cool while the officers prepared to move in. Long story short, the task force swarmed the office, and for the next hour, our shop was overrun with law enforcement. So if I missed our scheduled chat last week, my apologies. I promise this is a true story.
