CEOs and CLOs - This Is Your Steve Kerr Moment During a recent CLOLIFT project call with F500 CLOs, Brandon Carson, the CLO at Docebo, said, "This is our Steve Kerr moment." Meighan Hackett Poritz, who was in high school in 1994, was probably thinking about the great NBA coach. In 1994, GE did something bold. Jack Welch created the role of Chief Learning Officer and brought in Steve Kerr, a leadership scholar, to use learning as the lever for business transformation. GE was entering the digital era. Technology was changing fast, and Welch knew the real challenge wasn’t systems, it was how fast people could learn and adapt. Kerr made learning strategic. Crotonville became not a training center, but the heartbeat of GE’s culture, leadership, and change engine. Fast forward 30 years. We’re at that same kind of moment again. AI, automation, and data are reshaping how work gets done. Every company is being forced to rethink its operating model and its workforce strategy. Once again, learning is the lever. The CLO role, done right, is not about courses or content. It’s about building enterprise learning agility and embedding capability-building into the business itself. The lesson from 1994 still holds: When the CEO and CLO are tightly connected, learning becomes a force for transformation. So, CEOs - who’s your Steve Kerr? And CLOs - are you ready to play that role again? Because this is your moment. Our next challenge is to make it more agile, intelligent, and user-centred: integrating AI, analytics, and design thinking so it doesn’t just track learning, but interprets it — turning behavioural data into real-time insights that support leadership growth and organisational impact. At #CLOExchangeNY today, Carly Porter revisited Daniel Pink’s Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose framework from his book Drive. I’ve come across it before, but it landed differently this time. She spoke about emotional safety as the foundation for learning. It made me think about how we prepare people for AI. Readiness is not about more tools. It is about giving people space to try, stumble, and learn without fear. Autonomy is about trust. It means allowing people to make choices, explore their own paths, and take ownership of growth. Mastery takes patience. It is built through repetition, reflection, and the freedom to make mistakes along the way. Purpose gives direction. It connects daily effort to a larger meaning, reminding people why their work matters. Jackie Mountford said, “Think of AI not as competition, but as the smartest intern in the room.” That shifted something for me. We don’t have to outrun AI. We just have to learn how to lead with it. Heather Strickland and Chelsea Hernández spoke about the role of managers in creating safe learning environments through empathy, clarity, and curiosity. What stayed with me is this: -We do not need to have all the answers. -We need to create the space where people feel safe enough to explore them. This is why I really enjoy #CLOExchange events. #VUCAreadyAcademia (Part 2) In my intro post of this series, I spoke about the elephant in the room — how academia must face its own readiness for the VUCA world. This time, the elephant is still here… but now, we are talking to it. 🐘 Because acknowledging the problem is not enough. We need conversations — honest ones — about how we teach, assess, lead, and reward. The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of two of my fave conferences: RecFest USA and LinkedIn Talent Connect 2025! The shifts talked about consistently are already happening, and they demand a new way of thinking... and I'm here for it! Here are a couple of takeaways I'm immediately running with: 1. The AI Superworker Era What does this era look like for us showgirls? It means moving to a flexible, skills-based architecture and making sure HR is completely AI-First. Our clear priority is to use AI to wipe out those low-value tasks and create the AI Superworker, fundamentally elevating our team's human potential.   2. The Imperative for Change I think the most critical lesson for leaders today is this: if you don't start doing things differently, you'll never get a different outcome. Period. This means we have to stop pretending the old ways work. We need to embrace a new mindset where we're constantly experimenting, practicing, and exploring new approaches. We have to view those experiments not as failures, but as crucial data points that inform the next, better decision. (Also, AI everywhere, y’all!)
