Day 6 of the Instructional Design 7-Day Journey Getting a Job in Instructional Design A common question from new instructional designers is: “How do I actually get a job in instructional design?” Instructional design isn’t about job titles. It’s about the work — designing learning experiences that solve real problems. Whether the role is called Instructional Designer, Learning Designer, LXD, or eLearning Developer, the core skills are the same. Instructional designers typically: Analyze learning needs Write objectives and assessments Design learning activities and modules Create microlearning and job aids Collaborate with SMEs and stakeholders Academia vs Industry 🎓 Academia focuses on course design, faculty support, and structured timelines. 🏢 Industry focuses on onboarding, training, faster delivery, and measurable outcomes. Same skills. Different environments. What Employers Look For Understanding of instructional design principles Ability to explain design decisions A clear portfolio with 2–3 strong projects Communication and collaboration skills Reality check: many people miss opportunities not because they lack knowledge, but because they can’t show proof of skill. How to Position Yourself Choose a clear path (academia or industry) Translate your experience into instructional design language Build portfolio projects that match your target roles That’s how skills turn into real opportunities.

Most of our students at the School of Story Design are seasoned instructional designers who want to take their design skills to the next level. Such is the case with Angelica Grace. "Seeing the big picture was challenging for me at times. I tend to get stuck in the details. Following the Story Design process helped a lot, because I was able to keep my focus on the action list throughout each step. I have grown as a designer because I’m able to see business problems and potential solutions through a more analytical and action-driven lens. I’m equipped to develop more engaging and enjoyable training that actually works and meets goals." No matter how much experience we have, there's always room to grow, especially in the way we humanize, not just the product, but the process of instructional design. Instructional #Story Design is not just about writing a good story for training, it's about: 🔶 Interviewing stakeholders. 🔶 Guiding subject matter experts. 🔶 Yes, designing the best story for your learning audience 🔶 Using that story to train in a way that respects their ability to critically think and solve problems. I believe, Instructional Designers provide direction, not dictatorship. Great learning isn’t built by one role doing everything. IDs define learning intent and structure. Designers elevate ideas visually. Developers bring them to life technically. When ideation is treated as a starting point, not a final instruction, collaboration thrives and outcomes improve. Learning design is a team sport. Shared ownership creates stronger results than silent accountability…! Curious to hear…how do you ensure role clarity and collaboration in your learning teams?
