With data.census.gov down, researchers and analysts across the country are struggling to access critical data they rely on for policy analysis, journalism, and planning. My colleague Michael Hartnett found a way around the blackout using IPUMS and the tidycensus R package to pull Census data directly from the source. His latest blog post walks through how to access and work with Census data even when government websites go dark. It’s a useful guide for anyone who refuses to let politics get in the way of good data. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gKHNV6x8

Working with Census Data During the Federal Shutdown? As many have noticed, Census.gov and other federal data portals are experiencing reduced functionality due to the ongoing government shutdown. "A diverse coalition of 67 national, state and local business, nonprofit and academic entities that rely on timely census data, today urged final approval of funding for the U.S. Census Bureau in Fiscal Year 2026 (FY 2026), as soon as the government shutdown is over, because FY2026 is a critical planning year for the constitutionally mandated 2030 national headcount."

In January, U.S. Census data showed that Americans were flocking to the Sun Belt states and according to a new report from moveBuddha that trend is still going strong. The relocation tech company used proprietary data collected from 2020 through October 1, 2025, to analyze move trends. moveBuddha calculated the rates using an in-to-out ratio equation, based on the number of queries to move in divided by the number of queries to move out, using the company’s moving cost calculator. The report found that four of the top 10 states people are looking to move to most are located in the South. Find out which one is the most popular state Americans want to move to: cnb.cx/3LdPaH3

🎆🔢🏢The first federal #census was launched in 1850 by Federal Councillor and pioneer of Swiss statistics #StefanoFranscini. The census aimed to provide a comprehensive picture of the population: How many people lived where? In what conditions did they live, what were their occupations, what languages did they speak? For the young democracy, this information was very important to enable it to plan, take decisions and measure the impact of public policy. A concept for success: Shortly after, in 1860, the Federal Statistical Bureau was founded – the direct predecessor of today’s #FSO. 🎞️https://lnkd.in/gMsKs_wR ➡️https://lnkd.in/dc2jbuJp #175yearsCensus #165yearsFSO #FSO #Statistics #Data #Switzerland
