Life hack/ pro tip for anyone speaking in public: ✅ always make yourself part of the audience before you take the stage! 🎧listen to the questions / watch what is happening and build that context into your talk 🎉 can’t wait to take the floor at Microsoft next for the global finance org.. more to come

Jodi - great recommendation and it's one that I like to follow as well. As you describe, one of the best ways to connect with any audience is to note your shared experience in your talk. The other thing I like to do is to bring up something extremely current from the news. There is almost always a news headline from the past 24 hours that you can bring into your talk. Then your audience knows you're not simply repeating the exact same pitch you've done a dozen times!

good point but unfortunately, only those with true expertise can do this because it means throwing out the script -most "speakers" give same talk over and over, as they are speakers with good presentation skills but not experts. For example thousands speak on topics like EI, dealing with difficult people, but that does not mean he or she has expertise in those areas. I could give an engaging, entertaining, "talk" on the economy, but I am far from an expert on the subject. Experts can throw away a script, deal with spontaneous questions that shift the immediate topic and go in a different direction to meet participants' needs. Speakers can't do that.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the tip.
