Outside typical art markets, in cities with under-appreciated cultural legacies and high concentrations of wealth, Atlanta is part of a region that is “sometimes fetishized, always marginal,” says Sarah Higgins, executive and artistic director of the local publication Art Papers.

The Autry's newest exhibition Creative Continuities: Family, Pride, and Community in Native Art opens on November 15. The creation of Native American works involves a deep understanding of cultural protocols, histories, and traditions. Featuring selected works from the Autry’s Native American collections, Creative Continuities: Family, Pride, and Community in Native Art explores the meanings embedded in three aspects of Native culture: Knowing, Create, and Transference. Three contemporary Plains Indian artists—John Pepion (Blackfeet), Brocade Stops Black Eagle (Crow), and Jessa Rae Growing Thunder (Dakota/Nakoda)―reflect upon their relationships with works created by their Ancestors. The three Native culture bearers have each curated a section of the exhibition, framing works that originated within their respective communities behind one of the three concepts at the heart of the exhibition. Through this unique combination of cultural objects and stories, Creative Continuities aims to educate visitors about the diversity of Native American culture, history, and tradition that crosses tribal boundaries, past and present. https://lnkd.in/gsCkf2jq

Do you ever wonder how galleries gain amazing works of art? In the case of Monet’s L'Epte à Giverny (1884), the Walker Art Gallery is able to display the work to the public for free thanks to the Acceptance in Lieu Scheme. 👏 This scheme is responsible for some of the most interesting, unique and culturally valuable items in public collections across the country. We caught up with Kate O’Donoghue, Curator (International Fine Art) and Eleanor Dean, Visitor Experience Duty Manager who told us how this access to artwork is vital for museums. 🖼️ Read the blog 👇 https://lnkd.in/eJFyn9pr

KC Studio Arts Brief by Pete Dulin – The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art has acquired “shadows spell my name” by #LosAngelesartist Diedrick Brackens. The richly layered work of visual storytelling is now on view in the museum’s permanent collection galleries. Brackens used hand-dyed cotton and acrylic yarn to create four silhouetted and interconnected figures holding lanterns in a multicolored watery landscape. Cotton’s brutal history is symbolically and literally woven into the narrative, alluding to labor, migration and identity. Read more at https://lnkd.in/g5wtGjGd #fiberart #artmuseum #contemporaryart

Nature, Time and Money - a very thought provoking article by Dean Spears "If there is one thing I have learned over the past few years, it is that time is the most precious thing we can give and ask for. Money matters, of course, it pays for the surveys, the projects, the staff and the science, but time is what allows nature to breathe, people to connect, and ideas to take root." It might be worth taking this insight into other areas: museums and arts organisations, perhaps. https://lnkd.in/e8YxbSHJ
