New post from Hessie Jones, who tracked the discussions from the moment Trump declared war on Iran. Support was not widespread. Within Congress, there was a clear division. Among the Iranian community, the elation was met with uncertainty but hope. It was a welcome event from the two-score tyranny and repression Iranians have experienced. She argues that every move Trump made from the moment he took office the second time was made for this: the display of the U.S. military might... brought to you by Generative AI! She also argues Amodei cannot be heralded for his moral authority. Nor can Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI, Meta, nor Palantier. "The Militarization of Silicon Valley" has been happening for some time. Surveillance at scale is already happening today. Not surprisingly, in 2024, the House rejected specific amendments that would apply stricter rules on data collection under FISA Section 702. This section allows the NSA to collect foreign intelligence information, including data on foreign targets outside the United States. Many say it still permits the incidental collection of data of U.S. citizens without a warrant. From that moment, what has transpired since Trump 2.0 took office has created momentum to centralize data, relax oversight of big tech, and blunt media scrutiny. The business of war is massive, and backed by Venture Capital, it is no wonder that capitalism trumps values. Amodei said this when he pursued investment from two authoritarian regimes, Qatar and Saudi Arabia: "This is a real downside, and I'm not thrilled about it… Unfortunately, I think ‘No bad person should ever benefit from our success’ is a pretty difficult principle to run a business on.” This is the same technology each and every one of us uses for business transformation, for progressing humanity... at least that's what we were sold... The malevolence of generative AI: Can you still be a user of the same technology that is showing its darker side? https://lnkd.in/dKCNcH_q

It’s important to remember that Silicon Valley has always been intertwined with the military industrial ecosystem. The valley didn’t start with consumer software, it started in the 1940s with defence dept contracts funding DARPA, semiconductor and aerospace work. Commercial software came much later in the 1970s/80s, and social media came decades later. The valley isn’t suddenly being militarized, but the massive growth of consumer tech over the past few decades means many of us forgot - or never knew - about the Valley’s military tech roots.
