Typography is generally considered a blend of both science and art. While there are scientific principles that underpin legibility and readability, the aesthetic and expressive choices in typography are largely subjective and artistic. Typography relies on principles of visual perception and cognitive processing. For example, font size, spacing, and line length can be objectively measured and studied for their impact on readability. Research has investigated the relationship between specific typefaces and readability, particularly in digital environments. The choice of typeface, the manipulation of spacing, and the overall design of a layout are aesthetic decisions that can evoke emotions, convey meaning, and create a particular visual style. There is no single "right" way to apply typography, but there are rules and different designers may make different choices based on their artistic vision and those rules Effective typography requires a balance between scientific principles and artistic expression. Designers need to understand the scientific aspects of readability while also using their artistic judgment to create visually appealing and expressive layouts. Research in areas like neuroscience and cognitive psychology continues to shed light on the impact of typography on human perception and behavior. This research can inform the development of more effective and aesthetically pleasing typographic designs.
What an interesting design! I love typography. At first, I thought it was just a face, but then I saw how the letters revealed themselves. And how interesting that I had given this exact exercise to elementary school children in my role as a teacher, encouraging them to use their creativity to build anything they liked. My latest post was one of the most fascinating examples of that. Thanks for sharing ✅👌🏻
Lovely! As a designer I learned early that design in any capacity- typography, layout, composition is always problem solving first. I never really looked at it as science, but it is definitely analytical more than creative at first in my opinion. Glad to be able to have seen this in my feed.
That is a great illustration of type!
