Fintech Funding in 2025 in European Union: Are we reaching a sustainable stage? 🚀 Europe’s digital banking scene remains globally influential, with six of the ten most valuable tech companies founded in the region over the last 20 years emerging from fintech—including standout names like Revolut, Adyen, Klarna, N26, and Wise. These companies have propelled the EU’s reputation as a fintech powerhouse by combining technical innovation with aggressive expansion across borders and building platforms widely trusted for payments, banking, and money management. However, the funding environment in 2025 reflects a major recalibration in the sector. While investment remains resilient—European fintech attracted over $4.4 billion across 653 deals in the first half of 2025—the “growth at all costs” era has given way to targeted investments focused on infrastructure, profitability, and sustainable business models. In fact, despite high-profile successes, deal volume is below its peak, with VC funds increasingly channeling capital toward deeptech and healthtech alongside select vertical fintech innovations like B2B platforms, embedded finance, and AI-enhanced services. The sector’s most successful companies are adapting to this new funding reality by streamlining operations, diversifying product offerings, and leveraging regulatory advancements such as Open Banking and PSD3. With digital banking giants maintaining their position as industry leaders, new entrants are focusing on leaner models and robust risk management to attract investor confidence. Just completed the fourth module of the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford #FinTech Programme, focused on how technology continues to reshape the foundations of financial services, from identity and infrastructure to regulation and inclusion. A few reflections: 🔹 Digital Identity: This is one of the biggest enablers of inclusion, yet one of the hardest to solve. Around 850 million people globally still lack any form of recognised ID. Interoperability remains fragmented, what’s valid on one platform may fail on another, adding friction and systemic risk. A secure, trusted global identity layer could transform access to finance. 🔹 New Banking Infrastructure: To compete, banks must be responsive, nimble, and digital. Cloud-native platforms and open APIs are no longer optional; they’re essential. Open banking regulation (like PSD2) is accelerating this shift, making infrastructure innovation a strategic necessity, not just a tech upgrade. 🔹 Digital Wealth Management: The next generation of investors expects seamless, data-driven experiences. With around $90 trillion in the US and £6 trillion in the UK set to transfer to millennial investors, the market is vast and expectations high. Differentiation will depend on combining human trust with digital precision, using data and automation to scale hyperpersonalisation without losing the human layer that builds confidence. 🔹 RegTech: One of FinTech’s fastest growing areas. With around 200 global regulatory changes daily, automation powered by AI and ML has become vital to sustainable compliance. The market’s forecast to reach $24 billion by 2029, reflecting how governance and innovation now move in lockstep. 🔹 Insurtech & Proptech: Embedded insurance is redefining how protection products reach consumers, integrating seamlessly into digital ecosystems through open APIs. This shift enhances customer value and creates new revenue opportunities across industries. FinTech is shifting from disruption to reinvention, and these insights have been both challenging and energising.
