Why does a system that so many people recognize as broken continue to reproduce itself? That question is at the heart of a new #preprint led by Center researchers, examining #academic #publishing as a #complex #adaptive #system. Through stakeholder interviews and systems mapping, the team built a #CLD (causal loop diagram) tracing how prestige, evaluation metrics, commercial incentives, and publication pressure form loops in the system — loops that sustain high volumes and constrain individual agency even when dysfunction is widely acknowledged. The analysis, using the Action Scales Model, reveals that most reform efforts target weaker leverage points in the system. Long-lasting change likely requires confronting the goals and beliefs that, for instance, equate quantity of output with scientific excellence. This is precisely the kind of problem where #complexity methods are valuable: making the structure of a stubborn system visible, and asking better questions about where leverage may lie. The interactive CLD can be explored here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eGCiK5Xk Preprint: 📄 https://lnkd.in/eD3gmA6x Congratulations to Jeroen Uleman, Stéphane Tuffier, Morten Hulvej Rod, Mehdi Osooli, and Tibor V. 💡⚙️ Life Post Moore's Law — what does it look like? Smaller transistors no longer automatically mean better performance or lower costs, marking the end of an era that the industry had relied on for over 50 years. That was the central argument Professor Mark Horowitz from Stanford University presented at the comeback of INESC-ID Distinguished Lectures series on 23 March. A near-packed room gathered at Instituto Superior Técnico to hear Horowitz argue that future improvements must come from innovative design tools that enable small groups of application experts to build specialised hardware on top of established platforms, rather than creating entire system solutions from scratch. As Rodrigo Rodrigues, our Scientific Council President put it: "The topic is very timely, and Horowitz works across areas that bridge several research groups, which makes this lecture particularly interesting". More sessions are planned, each one depending on the opportunity to bring the right speaker to INESC-ID at the right moment. The inaugural issue of our UDIT newsletter is officially out! To kick things off, I sat down with our VP and CIO, Angela Chen, to discuss her vision for the year ahead. What struck me most was her commitment to changing how people experience technology at the University of Delaware. IT shouldn't feel like a confusing system or an afterthought. Angela's goal is for UDIT to act as a true partner to our campus, built on a foundation of greater transparency. That is exactly why this newsletter was created—we want our community to be active participants in our technological evolution, not just end-users. It is all about making the invisible work of IT visible, so we can move forward together. Here is to building the future together! 💙💛 (Link in the comments)

From siloed systems to campus operations that actually work together 💜 At the University of University of Colorado Boulder Conference Services has built an operation that can handle real scale. Over eight years, the team achieved 125% revenue growth while supporting increasingly complex programs across campus with Kx Software as their core system. Specifically, they are able to: ✅ Coordinate 100 to 125 residential programs each year ✅ Support 8,000+ overnight orientation guests every summer ✅ Manage 6,500 guests at a single national event ✅ Track 5,000+ service requests in one unified platform ✅ Use structured reporting that contributed to $5M in growth Discover how CU Boulder streamlined operations, reduced complexity, and built sustainable growth with Kx Software 👉https://lnkd.in/e5Y8552w Special thanks to Dan Dykstra, Carath DeFrancia, and Kristine Grosland for their partnership and collaboration in sharing this story 💜 #HigherEducation #CampusOperations #ConferenceServices #KxSoftware #Kinetic #HFYF

Via RT@HighWireTalk Ghislaine Maxwell's father, Robert Maxwell, built the for-profit peer-reviewed scientific journal system that has controlled what counts as "settled science" for decades. Scientists had to publish through it. Universities were forced to buy it at inflated prices. He sat at the top and collected the profits. https://lnkd.in/ePPTeAMt
