After several years in the automotive sector, I’ve recently returned to the fire door industry — and it’s clear that much has changed. The market continues to evolve in response to the Grenfell disaster, alongside the shift from British Standards (BS) to European Standards (EN). Yesterday’s Lunch & Learn session with Warringtonfire was a great opportunity to continue to develop my understanding. While the IDSL Group has deep built knowledge developed over decades — with colleagues who actively contribute to the development of new legislation — sessions like this are invaluable for those of us with less technical backgrounds. I’m sure that all organisations operating in this sector will acknowledge that continuing to develop their team’s knowledge in a rapidly changing environment is important. When I re-joined the IDSL group, I knew we were already well invested in the BS to EN transition, building on the already strong foundation of independent fire testing undertaken over many years. A few things stood out yesterday: 1. The R2F market had just 6 months to transition, while fire doors have until 2029. We all know 4 years will fly by. 2. The new EXAP process and its implications for fire test application. 3. A fascinating conversation with Carl about how AI might play a part in the future of our industry. What’s clear is that the necessary changes in the fire door sector will require significant investment from companies operating in it. Thanks to Carl Woodwiss and the team at Warrington Fire for the insight — and to our team for making time to engage.
