LankaPay, Sri Lanka’s National Payment Network, and Ant International, a leading global digital payment technology provider, have jointly enabled cross-border mobile payments for 1.7 billion Alipay+ users via the LankaQR network, enhancing the connectivity between global tourist community and the Sri Lankan merchants. Alipay+, a unified wallet gateway with cross-border payment system under Ant International, will initially enable 14 of its international payment partners for use across Sri Lanka. Travellers from 10 countries and regions, can simply scan the LankaQR at more than 400,000 merchants to make a payment, just as they are used to at home. The Alipay+ partners enabled for cross-border payment acceptance in Sri Lanka in the first phase include: AlipayHK (Hong Kong SAR), @MPay (Macao SAR), Hipay (Mongolia), GCash (Philippines), Changi Pay and OCBC Digital (Singapore), Touch ‘n Go eWallet and MyPB by Public Bank Berhad (Malaysia), Kaspi (Kazakhstan), Naver Pay and Toss Pay (South Korea), TrueMoney (Thailand), BigPay (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand), and Tinaba (Italy). This is a game changer for Sri Lanka’s Tourism Industry.

This marks a significant milestone in the evolution of digital payments in Sri Lanka. This collaboration not only enhances the convenience for tourists but also empowers local merchants, particularly SMEs, to tap into a broader customer base. It also fosters financial inclusion, streamlines transactions, and positions Sri Lanka at the forefront of the global digital economy. Fantastic news Channa de Silva !

I'm glad to hear LankaPay going down this route. Thinking about non-locals. Thailand is an example of how not to do it. QR code payments everywhere but tourists cannot easily access. Visa/master payment at very very few places even in Bangkok. Pulling out cash cost about 5USD a pop. It was a highly frustrating experience. Of course Sri Lanka already has far more broadly accessible digital payments options.
