Comfort vs. Courage: When Commitments Are Tested We as European speak easily about values—but credibility is proven when values carry cost. We talk about freedom from the safety of comfort, and when pressure rises, the response is often statements rather than decisions. If solidarity exists mainly in words, and commitment weakens when responsibility is tested, then our values lack resilience. In a less predictable world, credibility is built through preparedness and action—not repetition of principles. This leads to an uncomfortable but necessary question for Europeans: What is Europe’s and NATO’s concrete plan if the United States steps back from its security guarantees? Words matter. But courage, translated into action, matters more.
The Iran war has exposed just how weak the EU is on the world stage. They love to talk about "freedom" and "democracy", but lack the courage to defend it. #FreeIran

DELIAH is in the process of running focus groups across Europe on the relationship between humour and democracy. 😝 Interested in testing your own assumptions? 🧐 Check out our Substack post and see how you would answer some of our focus-group questions! 🙊
As the DELIAH project progresses, we plan to bring you regular updates of our research. We are currently organising focus groups to find out how Europeans think about humour and democracy. Curious to find out what is discussed in such a focus group and what kind of humour we show them? Humour, and satire, explore the boundaries of free expression, especially online (only yesterday I sent someone a joke that I realised was in extremely poor taste, but which I also thought was very funny (because I have a fairly dark (make that appalling) sense of humour), and I immediately followed up with a 'sorry if that was offensive' message). The Democratic Literacy and Humour project explores that tension, but focusing on better comedians than me. Have a read of this - very interesting.

Everyone talks about Democracy. But very few talk about how it actually feels on the ground. For some, democracy means voting once in 5 years. For others, it means struggling every day to be heard. One thing is clear -: Democracy is not just about rights. It is about access. It is about awareness. It is about participation. The real question is not “Is India a democracy?” The real question is — “How inclusive is our democracy?” Still learning. Still questioning. #Democracy #PoliticalScience #BPSC #India #Governance

Leadership in public life often begins with the courage to question authority. In this statement, Pawan Kalyan reflects on the philosophy behind the JanaSena movement. “JanaSena was not created for power. It was created to question power.” The message underscores a broader principle in democratic systems. Political institutions and movements are expected not only to govern but also to ensure accountability, transparency, and representation of public concerns. Strong democracies depend on leaders and institutions that are willing to question, debate, and improve systems of governance. #PawanKalyan #JanaSena #Leadership #PublicLeadership #IndianPolitics #Democracy #PoliticalCommunication #Governance

Two major insights: ➡️ Foreign policy is no longer just shaped by strategic interests, but by volatile public emotions. Whoever controls the narrative can also create openings for geopolitical influence within domestic audiences. ➡️ In this context, managing narratives and emotional dynamics of the general public becomes as critical as traditional diplomacy itself.
People don’t just form opinions — they feel their way into them. And those feelings are shaping Europe’s response to the war in Ukraine. Our latest findings expose an uncomfortable reality: ➡️ Support is not as stable as it looks ➡️ War fatigue is real — and growing ➡️ Misinformation isn’t fringe — it’s mainstream in parts of Europe This isn’t just about politics. It’s about trust, fear, identity — and how easily they can be manipulated. If we ignore this, we’re not just misreading public opinion. We’re losing control of the narrative.
