Another 18MW/4.5MWh BESS project running. The Huanneng Changxing Thermal Power Plant project integrates an 18MW/4.5MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to significantly enhance the plant's grid frequency regulation capabilities. Strategically utilizing Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) batteries, the system is engineered for exceptional safety, ultra-long cycle life, and high-rate performance, perfectly matching the demanding, high-frequency nature of ancillary services. This "thermal-plus-storage" model transforms a traditional power plant into a more agile asset, enabling rapid response to grid fluctuations. This not only improves grid stability but also creates substantial new revenue streams by providing high-quality frequency regulation services. The project stands as a benchmark for the modernization of thermal power assets, demonstrating a viable pathway for them to evolve and secure their value within the increasingly renewable-heavy energy landscape.

Generalized model-predictive control for supercapacitor and superconducting magnetic energy storage systems I am pleased to share our new publication in Renewable Energy Focus. This work was developed together with Alejandro Garcés Ruiz and Walter Gil González. We propose a unified modeling framework for SCES and SMES, and develop a model predictive control strategy that ensures precise regulation of both active and reactive power with formal stability guarantees. The approach improves transient response, reduces power oscillations, and enhances grid stability under variable operating conditions.
