One of the biggest challenges in ion exchange membranes has always been the trade-off between conductivity and selectivity. Microporous confinement strategies may offer a fundamentally different approach — and could become an important direction for next-generation membrane technologies in flow batteries, green hydrogen, lithium extraction, and beyond.

ZH Energy's SPEEK membrane has recently become a best-seller on its international sales platforms. The feedback is mainly driven by stable performance, low swelling behavior, and practical cost-performance balance for flow battery applications. The sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) membrane is a high-performance non-fluorinated ion-exchange membrane based on a sulfonated PEEK backbone, specifically developed for flow battery systems. The arrangement of ether bonds, ketone groups, and aromatic rings gives the membrane strong adaptability under electrochemical operating conditions. Compared with many other non-fluorinated ion-exchange membranes, SPEEK shows lower swelling behavior, helping avoid performance degradation caused by membrane expansion. Applications include: Zinc–manganese flow batteries Zinc–bromine flow batteries Zinc–iron flow batteries All-iron flow batteries Electrodialysis separation systems Key features: 1. Low swelling behavior, high mechanical strength, and strong chemical stability; ion selectivity can be adjusted through sulfonation degree 2. ZH Energy completed and shipped a 10,000 m³/year vanadium electrolyte electrochemical production line to a European customer. The system is integrated in a 20-ft container, with full-process digital control and real-time monitoring, supporting automated operation. It adopts a modular architecture, with capacity scalable from 3,000 to 60,000 m³/year. ZH Energy has delivered several vanadium electrolyte production lines in domestic and international projects. On April 1, the 14th Energy Storage International Conference & Expo (ESIE 2026) opened in Beijing. During the event, Shenzhen ZH Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. was among the companies presented with certifications by SGS. Its FStack series flow battery stacks were certified to both UL 1973 and IEC 62932-2-2. The certification covers the full FStack range (FStack-35, FStack-32, FStack-16, and FStack-10), corresponding to different stack configurations. It indicates alignment with international requirements in safety, reliability, and technical performance. During the ceremony, Dr. Wei Xie, Founder and Chief Scientist of ZH Energy, noted that the certification reflects the team’s continued focus on flow battery technology, as well as its approach to safety and product quality. The FStack series has been deployed in more than ten countries, with ongoing collaborations across different applications. The stacks are developed in-house, covering material selection, structural design, manufacturing, and testing. This integrated approach helps maintain consistency and quality across production. Each batch undergoes multiple rounds of performance and safety testing before delivery to support stable operation in practical use. #Stack #FlowBattery
