If we don’t understand the learner, we’re just designing based on assumptions. 1. Every learner is different. 2. Some are new and need guidance. 3. Some are experienced and just need clarity. 4. Some are too busy to sit through long courses. If we design the same way for everyone, it rarely works. The more we understand their work, their challenges, and their reality, the better we can design something that actually helps. Because at the end of the day, learning should feel useful not just well-designed. Note:- Empathy in instructional design means designing learning for the learner, not for the content. #InstructionalDesign #LearningAndDevelopment #LearnerExperience #WorkplaceLearning #ELearning #CorporateTraining
Strong point on understanding the learner’s context — especially how different realities shape how learning is received. What I’ve been seeing is that even when learning is designed with high empathy and relevance, organisations still face a challenge one step further — how to ensure that what feels useful actually translates into consistent capability in the workplace. That’s where the conversation seems to be shifting next.
Fabulous quotes about learning and design which fulfill learners understanding
Well said ! Thinking in the learners perspective is a very important
I’m not an Instructional Designer. However, I want to share my thoughts after reading your post. I had experience in helping my friends learn English (so I was involved in some types of instruction and teaching)... You’re right! Understanding the learner is the first step, and everything else is built upon that. I love the way you categorized what types of understanding, so we can have the big picture of “a learner world”. One of the things I want to add to understand “a learner world” is: “their language.” From my experience: Language reflects the learner’s beliefs, feelings, and thoughts about “a situation or a problem.”...Language also reveals “the perspective gap” and “the knowledge gap.”... If we want to design for implementation and behavior change, it’s important to know “their perspective and thinking”, because thinking guides action, then guide behavior.
