The Transport Secretary's letter to DFTO's new Chair was published last week. It's a five-page letter covering all the things you'd expect: performance, fares, rolling stock, workforce, the path to GBR. What I did NOT expect was "shared data" being referenced as a precondition for whole-system success, "integrated data" named as a core GBR capability that must start forming now, and "data and innovation" listed as a specific organisational investment DFTO is expected to make. Three mentions in five pages, alongside operational performance, timetabling, customer experience, and fares reform, and crucially not in the footnotes. I've spent a fair amount of the last two years trying to make the case that data integration and infrastructure is a strategic dependency for rail reform rather than a back-office function to sort out once the structural questions are settled. It's genuinely nice to see that reflected in a letter from the SoS. If you're working on any of this from inside DFTO, NR, RDG, or one of the TOCs now starting to think of themselves as part of something larger, I'd like to hear what you're seeing. The problems are more tractable than the industry sometimes gives itself credit for, and there are more people quietly working on them than the noise would suggest.

One data point that can be generated from the excellent time series of the port-level Liner Shipping Connectivity Index LSCI is the number of ports in the global shipping network. The long-term trend had been positive for decades. Then came covid and carriers redeployed to more profitable routes. The numbers started recovering, but seem to be stuck now below the pre-covid port count. Thoughts? Explanations?
