This hit home. As a trainer, I’ve had sessions where everything looked perfect—great energy, interactive activities, full participation… But later I asked myself: Did real learning happen? That’s when I realized the difference between lesson planning and instructional design. Planning fills time. Design creates impact. Now, before any session, I anchor myself on one question: 👉 What should my learners be able to do by the end—and how will I know? That one shift has completely changed how I design learning. #TrainerLife #InstructionalDesign #LearningImpact #Facilitation
Is instructional design the same as lesson planning? Most people use instructional design and lesson planning interchangeably… But they’re not the same, and understanding the difference changes everything. Lesson planning is what we do day-to-day. It answers: - What am I teaching today? - What activities will students do? - What materials do I need? It’s immediate. It’s tactical. It’s the execution. Instructional design zooms out. It answers: - What should students walk away understanding? - Why does this lesson matter in the bigger picture? - How do all the pieces connect over time? It’s strategic. It’s intentional. It’s the architecture behind the lesson. Here’s where it matters most: I’ve seen beautifully planned lessons…Fun activities, engaging materials, full participation… …but no real learning transfer. Why? Because the lesson was planned but not designed. When instructional design is missing, you get: - Activities without purpose - Engagement without outcomes - Coverage without retention When instructional design is present, you get: - Clear alignment between objective, activity, and assessment - Learning that builds over time - Intentional experiences—not just tasks A simple shift I coach educators on: Before planning the lesson, ask: What should students be able to do by the end, and how will I know? That one question turns planning into design. Because at the end of the day…We’re not just planning lessons. We’re designing learning experiences. #InstructionalDesign #LessonPlanning #Education #TeacherTips #LearningDesign #EdTech #TeacherDevelopment #CurriculumDesign
